Brokenhearted breakup songs for gals...

I looked around and decided to go ahead and post here in the powder room...I hope it fits.

I have just recently gone through a breakup that has left me quietly devastated (I know, which ones don't but this has been the roughest I've been through in a very long time). Do you gals have any good vintage/older song suggestions that are geared toward us females? I love music from the past; the heartfelt simplicity reaches me on levels that the newer stuff doesn't always find. My mind is all fuzzy, I'm stuck in a rut and I need something cathartic.

I feel awful and music is like medicine...any suggestions would be so appreciated.

Peggy Lee's "All Dressed Up with a Broken Heart" and "Linger in My Arms a Little Longer".....actually the whole Capitol Records Collection CD is a rather good one....I listened to it over and over and over during a breakup I had back in college. There are some nice an uplifting tracks on there as well that will keep you from dipping too deeply into the well of suffering. :)

Sigh. And Annie Lennox's rendition of "Every Time We Say Goodbye" from the Cole Porter tribute album, Red Hot and Blue....

But be careful...that ones a real a doozy....and will make you weep uncontrollably. But you might as well get it out now. :) It still makes me sniffle. :) That whole album is good too---all Cole Porter covers. He was such a good songwriter.

Hang in there.....as you said....you've been thru it before. It's like muscle memory...your body and spirit will carry you thru.

I'm fond of Nina Simone when blue. But perhaps not particular minded towards men but more of trying to empower myself somehow.

Big hugs to you. I know that it hurts but it will make you stronger. Someday you will see it as a time that you can learn something about yourself from. I believe it is never a mistake to love someone, just make sure you love yourself more.

Sorry to hear about your break-up Tallulah.

We've all been there at some time or another - it's truly awful. The best thing you can do is surround yourself with your friends and mind yourself.

My Grandmother always said "The darkest hour is before the dawn" and I completely agree with her - things will get better for you.

Well as you were looking for heartbreak songs the two that spring to mind are Julie London's "The End of the World" and Frank Sinatra's "Send in the Clowns" (although I prefer Barbra Streisand's version)

Keep your chin up and mind yourself.

erm...I'm an odd one when it comes to upset music, so I"m no good, I tend to lean towards sadistic sarcastic musical songs or screaming cussing rock songs...but one that always makes me feel better is

"put on your sunday clothes" from Hello Dolly, not exactly golden era though...

I'm so sorry for you. I know it's rough going now. My personal choices are Cry Me a River by any number of people and Good Morning Heartache by Billie Holiday.

It hurts..but that's his lose.. anyone who doesn't value you, doesn't deserve you.

Soak in the tub, lots of chocolate, cry, cry, cry.. eventually get dolled up and go out and turn on the charm.. just some smiles from some new guys will make you feel better..

in the meantime..

Ella Fitzgerald "Bewitched Bothered and Bewildered"
Chris Connor "But Not for Me"
Sarah Vaughn "It Never Entered My Mind"

and if you want to sob, any version of "What'll I do"

I'm no good at this topic because I lean toward the angsty music instead of the sorrowful (none of which is "vintage" by any means), but my heart goes out to you!!

I'm so sorry to hear of your breakup hun. There are a few "stages" to the breaking up period, so I have a few suggestions for each of those.

The Mourning Period
You will feel like crying, and you should. No need to bottle up those negative emotions. Have a good cry while listening to:

*Stormy weather (Etta James does a very nice version)
*The Man that Got Away (Judy Garland)
*I'll Be Seeing You (Billie Holiday)
*Tears on My Pillow (Little Anthony and the Imperials)

The "Still Sad, But Getting Over it" Period
Sure, you are still sad but your thoughts might wander to reminiscing about love...

*I Want To Be Loved (Dinah Washington)
*We Belong Together (Ritchie Valens)
*You Made Me Love You (Harry James)
*Why Do Fools Fall In Love (Frankie Lymon & The Teenagers)

The "There's Hope" Stage
You've survived this heatbreak and now love with someone else seems possible

*Blue Moon (Billie Holiday)
*Can't Help Falling in Love With you (Elvis)
*Besame Mucho (Jimmy Dorsey)

For me, music heals all wounds and I hope it helps you too hun.

I think this one has already posted, but whenever I'm feeling sad and self-indulgent (which you have every right to feel) I lean towards The End of the World by Skeeter Davis:

I also like "They Can't Take That Away From Me" -- the Fred Astaire version. I still get to be sad, but with a little bit of hope.

I'm sending you virtual hugs, kisses, and a cup of hot tea from the bottom of my heart to make you feel better ;)

When I have the blues over a man.....:(

Patsy Cline....Big Mama Thornton...Billie Holiday...Etta James...

When I go from blue to screw you....lol

Aretha Franklin...Ruth Brown

But don't you worry, men are like buses....stand at the bus stop long enough and eventually they'll be another bus that come along to pick you up!lol lol
It's always fun to explore different bus routes....
