Ah, you might as well try it out Vlad! What we do is an over kill to begin with, hate to tell you but, it is. At first I was kind of leery but, I really wanted to wear one seeing I paid $75 bucks on it. I wore it and it was a hit! Just go for it, who cares what others think! If they have a problem with it, it's just a sign that they wish they were brave enough to do something. It also pisses them off that they can see that you don't care what they think! Oh, that's a fun one!

Any way, don't knock it till you try it! Because you'll never know till you do!

I am with you on this Wild Root. In this day and age, people are able to walk out in public in their bed clothes and they are able to walk down the street looking like total FREAKS covered with tattoos, piercings and hair that has been dyed various colors of the rainbow and it is regarded as no big deal. So if a person has a problem with someone who actually takes the effort to dress attractively with style and class - well, that is more of a reflection on that person than it is with the individual with good taste. To heck with such people - they are probably nothing more than intolerant mind-numbed hippies anyway. SOMEONE has to take the lead and become the trendsetter for a renaissance of the higher aesthetic standards which were flushed down the proverbial toilet by the nihilism of the 1960s.

Obviously, there are certain occasions where such dress might not be appropriate - for example, a conservative job interview. But any place where it is considered acceptable to dress like a freak - well, it ought to be just as acceptable to dress like someone with class, style, taste and standards.

Yeah, wearing a boater to a job interview or something like that in nature, it's best to dress as you should. But, if you're running around town doing what ever, wear whatever you like! To heck with the masses, they have not a clue of what taste is even if it bit them in the face!

they don't stretch

Just a heads up, you might have to get 1 size up in the Boater, i wear 7 1/8 and my boater is 7 1/4, they are very rigid. I wore mine out with a grey pinstripe and while I was in line at the library an older guy (50-60) started taling to me about how he used to wear one and that they don't make good looking hats like that anymore. it was GREAT!!

I just wanted to mention that boaters - though obviously not worn by very many guys - were still generally available well into the 1960s.

I was a hat collector when I was a (weird!) little kid, and I bought two brand-new boaters from a soon-to-go-out-of-business hat store in Yonkers, NY in roughly 1965 and 1967. I still have them, and the second one is still in very good shape. (We actually trashed the first one onscreen in a faux-1920s comedy b/w silent Super 8 movie we made in the mid-70s!) Alas, I wore a size 6-7/8 back then and I'm a 7-1/8 now, so I can't really wear it...

I found one in an antique store for 75$. Its from the 20's and its in my size. I figured I had to get one after reading John Dillingers biography(He wore a boater the night he got shot.) The guys at the morgue went into great detail as to what he was wearing.)

I just got it for 25 $ cause the brim was cracked. It's(or is it "was") made by the Cosmopolitan company in NYC. Is there any way to fix it? Its broken on 2 places, but its still holds together for now. Thanks

You might try Elmer?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s glue. It is straw and should work. I'm not sure on how to fix a boater or if they can be fixed. I would try Elmer?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s or Elmer?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s wood glue.

Reviving an old thread here, but it was the only one that came up on a search for "Strawboater" and if I understand forum etiquette, it's better to keep threads under control than to start a new one.

Anyway, I was wondering if there's been any breakthroughs in the care and repair of these hats in the last six years. I've got one that has a few minor cracks, not all the way through, and the thing is wearable and holds up pretty well. I'm just wondering what I can do to keep it in its current shape as long as possible.

If there's a thread I missed that deals with this, please feel free to jerk a thumb in that direction.
