Unless you're European, you may not have heard of ...

MAX RAABE und das PALAST ORCHESTER ("Max Raabe and the Palace Orchestra")

This incredible, authentically 1920s looking and sounding orchestra band takes famous modern pop and rock songs and replays them in the 1920s style, complete with Rudy Vallee-style warbling. Songs like:

-- We Will Rock You

-- Oops! I Did It Again

-- Super Trouper (that old ABBA song)

-- Sex Bomb

-- Lady Marmalade

-- Uptown Girl

-- Another Day in Paradise

-- Angel

You can listen to samples at the following link. Enter it, scroll down a third of the page, then check out the sample of "We Will Rock You" (on Disc 2): http://www.amazon.de/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0001ZWL7E/ref=pd_ecc_rvi_f/028-4851370-6218926

The orchestra also plays genuine 1920s and '30s songs.

Their website is here: http://www.palastorchester.de/index2.php

I have two of his CDs and love all his music... Thankfully my German is sorta okay so I can understand some of the songs... though oops I did it again needs no translation.

I wish they would tour here. Maxwell tried to book them for the Argyle once.

I'm surprised we didn't bring them up on the Lounge earlier...

They actually have done some American tours. I saw them live in San Antonio a while back, and I know that they played in New York at Carnegie Hall this year.

Also on iTunes. Great for sampling if, like me, you find that the Real Media files at Amazon are dead as usual.

Great stuff!

Marc, if ever we meet, I'll owe you more hooch than you can swig.

It used to be Detroit....
I've heard this band, and all I can remember is being blown away by their rendition of "Night and Day". And to be perfectly honest, the thought of a 1920's version of "We Will Rock You" makes me cringe.

(1920's Berlin Cabaret theme party.... boy, I'd love one of those for my next birthday!)

There are some of those around.

Is the Origin?°ln?? Pražsk?? Symfonick?? Orchestr still active? They were great, and I think, took up playing this sort of music earlier than Max Raabe, also combining old standards, in this case Czech, with their own creations.

Love it.
