Evidently Hungry Hermann kept cadging tidbits off his boss's plate. Certainly looked most feminine of the inner circle.

My mother (a history teacher until a couple of years ago)n has always sworn that Goring did a heck of a lot of weed, which, according to some, imbalances the male hormones in the body and has a feminising effect. [huh]

He was kinda a busty guy by the end, though I was never sure whether that was hormones or just down to the fact that he was kinda blimpish all over....

His 'on again, off again' with heroin evidently caused his weight to swing like Oprah. But his pecs were decidedly flabby.
(risking accusation of hijacking a thread with this interesting subject, it's hard to believe the fat junkie was ever a dashing, svelte fighter pilot. I have read (it's in the ubiquitous 'Wikipedia'), that for some reason, he was so unpopular with the surviving members of his old Jagdgeschwader, that he was never invited to their reunion events, even when he was a Nazi bigwig with all his accumulated titles/jobs).

Didn't he also take a round from some polizei's old 1910 Mauser pocket model during the beer halle putsch in a less than flattering place???? I always heard this didn't help matters any either.....

As for the rest of the story,, I always enjoyed "The Producers"........

Didn't keep him from fathering a daughter and genocide. The ubiquitous 'Wikipedia' has some fascinating famly tidbits: He had a nephew who flew bomber missions for the US AAF!

Jinkies, that's fascinating! I wonder whether that unpopularity in his earlier days was part of what motivated him later on. I've long believed a lot of Hitler's psyche was a reaction to and moulded by his days of rejection and being the little guy who couldn't get into art school, saw Jews around him doing well, all that.... I honestly believe that some of the very most evil things ever done by man were motivated by very petty, mundane, human experiences. Which to my way of thinking makes them all the more horrifying.

Ha, I always loved The Producers, in both incarnations. The original, in 68, much have been quite a daring thing to drop in there, after a decade of so many gung-ho war pictures.

Never heard that one!

I think there's a thread round here somewhere on that.... interesting story. I have heard of a few other German-born guys in Allied armies during the war, though none with quite that connection. Can't have been an easy position to be in (extrapolating from the experiences a guy I know who also hails from the Six Counties originally had after joining the TA over here and being on manoeuvres with some regular army who had had mates killed in Ireland).

Behind the 8 ball,..
He also wore makeup, and was known for his flamboyant medal-encrusted "uniforms" and extravagant lifestyle. Hitler really disliked him more and more towards the war's end. In one sequence of the famous home movies shot at his home, from which lip readers have dubbed in the missing dialogue,..he comments to an officer, " I looked at him across the dining table, and then I knew that what they say is true, that pigs eat the flesh of their own."
He was kinda a busty guy by the end, though I was never sure whether that was hormones or just down to the fact that he was kinda blimpish all over....

Seems to have been the Liberace of the Reich.

Oh, that's cold. Kind of a defining statement and a good summation of ole' Herman the German, but COLD.

I'm not really too sure who would have felt the most insulted by that statement, Herman or Liberace...[huh]

Don't matter, they're both gone anyway...

My understanding is that was the origin of his morphine/heroin addiction. He was left was smuggled out if Germany after the failed 1923 uprising and took ample amounts of self-prescribed pain killers while on the run. Goring had chronic pain the rest of his life from that wound.

Seems to have been the Liberace of the Reich.

Liberace only pounded piano keys and I suppose the occasional pool boy. It has been a surprise to read in Richard Evans' trilogy on the Third Reich (The Coming of the Third Reich, The Third Reich in Power and The Third Reich at War), how much of a 'spark plug' for the Final Solution our Hermann was. He was the one who actually directed Heydrich (on you-know-who's orders, David Irving to the contrary apology), to organize and run it, within Himmler's satrapy. Whether this was from some long held anti-semitism or to try to win back some favor with his boss, is not clear.
His anti-semitism would be very perverse, in view of the generous involvement of a wealthy, Jewish Bavarian nobleman in his family's affairs (pun intended-some speculation the Jewish Ritter von Eppenstein was the father of Hermann's younger brother Albert). Eppenstein provided considerable financial and influential help to the family. According to the Wikipedia (I read Irving's Goring bio years ago but just reread the blurb in the online source) Hermann was very fond of this man.

Hitler's Relatives

Hitler's nephew, William Patrick Hitler served as a pharmacists mate in the U.S. Navy during WWII. The story goes, that when he went to the draft office and introduced himself, the recruiter said, "Glad to see you, Hitler. My name's Hess." Goring's younger brother, Albert helped many Jews escape to freedom! One thing I have noticed to show that a lot of behavior is Nurture not Nature, none of the Hitler's great nephews and nieces have apparently ever been in major trouble, they all seem to have led normal lives.
