Brim width of Akubra Federation

Quick question: Can anyone tell me what the true brim width of a stock Akubra Federation is? I've heard it's under 3" but still looks pretty wide on most people.

hatsdirect.com lists the Brim 70 x 73mm. The brim dimensions are listed under the thumbnail, and not the hat description, for some reason.

Mine measures 2-3/4 by 2-7/8 (aka the stated 70x73mm).

Just measure my fed deluxe 60 and they are front and back 2 7/8th and sides are 2 5/8th. Has been a great hat so far to travel, hunt and wear everyday.

The brim measurements you gat from anyone will be approximate, but always close. Definately under 3" anyway. The brim can vary slightly from one hat to the next. I've owned a total 4 Federations in my time, and been around mnay others. While the average on mine was 2 7/8 x 2 5/8. I also hear that they tend to be slightly smaller for small head sizes.

I own a size 59. The brim is 2 5/8 on the sides and 2 7/8 in the front/back. I'd say it's pretty consistent with the other measurements listed so far.

Not trying to hijack the thread, (well, I am I guess - correction: my apologies for hijacking the thread ) but does anyone know how to go about cutting the brim on a Federation? I want the sides at 2 1/2 and the front/back at 2 3/4. This seems tricky to me. Advice?

It should already be dimensionally cut so you just take an even 1/8 th inch all the way round at a time.

Yes, but won't the transition area of the dimensional brim cause problems? I've only trimmed non-dimensional hats.

Check your hat when you get first get it. When I got mine a couple of years ago it just didn't look right. I played around with shapes, and creases and still didn't like the way it looked on my head, so it didn't get much use. I just figured the style wasn't right form my face shape, and left it at that. Mid way through last year I revisited the problem and discover that the they cut the brim wrong and it was 2 3/4 on the sides, and 2 1/2 front and back. I didn't attempt to return it, since I'd had it for about 2 years and had shaped it half a dozen different ways. I cut it down to 2 1/2 all the way around and now I where it every day. Amazing what a difference 1/4 inch makes. Still wish it was longer front and back like it's supposed to be, but I have an AB coming in the spring so I'm not worrying too much about it.

My Camptown has a dimensional brim and came out right when I cut it. Just mark 1/8th inch all the way around and cut no problems. the dimension will still be there just shorter all the way around. then take a piece of sand paper to the edge to smooth it out.

Cooncatbob gives a pretty good explanation here, about 2/3 of the way down the page. He used a drafting compass to draw an even line around the brim of the hat then cut it with a pair of scissors.

Ironically, I just trimmed the brim of my Fed Deluxe last night. I had it done at a (Western) hat shop. (Their brim trimmer measures from the side of the crown, so it made the brim the same dimension all the way around. I wasn't interested in keeping the dimensional brim so it wasn't an issue.)

I was trying to visualize the problem in my head, without actually handling the hat, so I guess I got confused. Or else I'm stupid.

I used something called a tailors hem ruler or something like that. It looks like a small ruler with a slide on it. that had a little lip that hugged the edge of the brim while I just slid it around marking 1/8th all the way around, and then cut it nice and slow!

I would be too wary of trying to trim the brim width myself. Does anyone on the Lounge do this for a price? Or can you bring the hat to a hatter to do this, e.g., Jimmy Pierce, Gus Miller, etc.? Thanks.

I had a small-town hatter shorten the brim by 3/8, and it wasn't that cheap. Otherwise I'd go back and have her take off another eighth or two. She kind of talked me into being reluctant, probably because of the uncommonly high crown.

Anyway, it's well done, and it's not unproportional as such.

But I found that my grey fed had too much brim for my face. I set a drawing compass at 1/4 inch, drew a line all the way around the hat and took a pair of cheap scissors, the plastic ones you get at Wally World for $3.99 in the cutlery section and cut counter clockwise right down the line. I then smoothed the edge with 180 grit sandpaper.
