Always brim down. Brim up, I look like Gabby Hayes.

It all depends on the hat, but just check out how friendly Alan looks ... see above ...

It's fun to pop the brim every once in a while with the right hat.

PS ... You forgot Yogi Bear

I tried the brim up look...I just looked like a goof. So, it's brim down for me. If I want a more casual look, I'll tilt the hat back a bit.

I've seen other fellows wearing the brim up, though, and they look just fine.

Well, sometimes it works, sometimes less so.

I think JD's has a slightly "gangster" curve to the brim, similar to something Al Capone would have worn.

I've had mixed success with that kind of brim shaping (note my avatar, albeit not a good picture for reference).

As far as wide brims go (as Alan showed) a Western or an Open Road looks good with a dish instead of a down front brim. Stingies look fine up, too. Also (as Depp shows above) the "Hollywood brim" with it up on one corner and down in the other across the front looks good, too. But I am not a fan of the up brim on a regular fedora with brims between 2-3/8 and 2-7/8.

I forgot about FDR, but he is a good example.

Just look how friendly he appears with that brim popped up.

I will admit, I have several hats you can't do this with.

My Knox 20 dress hat would look like a sailor hat with the brim popped, but other ones are just right.

I guess it is up to each wearer.
