Brim shaping?

:D I had no idea my Dobbs Twenty "Westward" has got a tire shaped brim.

I found it out the hard way,......the other day while pheasant hunting up in the Oklahoma panhandle, (so flat you can really see Texas, Colorado and Kansas from the top of any prairy-dog mound),.......that danged 30mph north wind blew it off my head and sent it rolling down the dirt road on it's brim so far we had to load back up in the truck to just chase it down.

I actually raised my shotgun to shoot the damned thing just to stop it from rolling away!

At first I thought this was a humorous story until I read about getting ready to SHOOT the hat. I was then horrified... But after considering what you said, I saw the genius in shooting it. Why wait years for a hat to get that look of a well worn and loved beater? Just let it roll along the road for a while and then shoot it! Instant distressing. Have that decades old look on a new hat in one weekend! My hat's off to you sir.

The instructions that came with my Resistol state that the brim should be snapped "ear to ear", for what it's worth..

:eek:fftopic:
Once I downloaded that and then magnified it to 200% it all became quite clear!

:eek:ntopic:

I tried snapping it in front and then moving my hands along the brim, pulling down, until my thumbs touched my ears. Interesting -- the hat ended up snapped like it always is.

I always store my hats with the brim snapped up and on a rack. Wonder if that helps?!?

Hi,

You know, if you shoot skeet and get a perfect score, then your skeet buddies will whip your hat off your head and......

Well, let's just say, don't wear one of your good hats skeet shooting!!

Later!

I use the opposite approach from the original poster. I wet and curl the sides of the brim up (and allow to dry of course) then fold the front down. This has the effect of lowering the back and making a more or less straight line through the transition to the front. As you curl the sides up, you take out apparent curl from the front and back.

Got some photo examples? I know my Stratoliner is sort of stowed sides curled up in it's factory box. :eusa_clap :eusa_clap :eusa_clap

I have a couple of snaps that I dont wear because I dont like that I cant alter their brim shape. I have found that snap brims kind of do what they want and dont respond much, if at all, to my attempts to change their shape, probably simply due to the way they are made. They have built in excess curl and a bound edge, which is what creates their ability to snap.

My opinion is that if you are a fedora wearer that doesnt want to mess with a brim, then get a snap because itll always hold the same shape. If, however, you want to 'futz' with a brim, and make it look a certain way, then avoid a snap brim.
