Break Out the Board Games!

Anyone have a game that gets pulled out when all the family is around this time of year? I love board games, but I am entirely alone in this around the Scotrace Compound. Trivial Pursuit is a favorite, along with the Golden Era warhorse, Monopoly. What do you like to play?

I am a Trivial Pursuit fan, myself. I like games that test intelligence or skill. I am not a fan of games of random chance.

We used to play Monopoly at my grandparents house. That was always nice. All of our board games haven't been touched in years!

The latter part of our family get togethers always brought the usual, "who wants to play Lotto?" This is a board game similar to Bingo.
I like any board game or game of chance that brings a good time for all.

My wife and I have gotten interested in the game Clue. We are even thinking of doing a Clue Party where everyone dresses as the characters. I could do Colonel Mustard. I could wear my Air Corps Pinks and Greens. It would be fun.

My family is huge on playing games together. When we have holiday meals together, the television stays off and we play games such as Sequence, Risk, Trivial Pursuit, Taboo, and my favorite - Uno Attack!

The mister and I also play Yahtzee, Connect Four, Scrabble, and all sorts of card games. (He's teaching me how to play poker.)

We usually head over to the in-laws for Christmas dinner, and afterwards some type of game is usually brought out. Usually, it's Trivial Pursuit, but first Christmas I played it at their place, I ended up wiping the floor with everybody, six pies to two at the most, thus earning the wrath of my mother in law, reigning Trivial Pursuit champion.

So now, we usually break out some other game. Cranium has taken over as the new favourite, and others such as Scattergories and Balderdash have made for an entertaining evening or two. If it's just me, my wife, my sister in law and her boyfriend, we like to play Scrabble, usually.

The wife loves to play Monopoly, but I can't stand the game. Probably because I'm consistently the first person to go broke.

Monopoly has always been a family favorite -- when I was little, my cousin and I would play marathon games of it that lasted for days at a time, and I actually do much better handling Monopoly money than I ever have with the real stuff!

Sorry is another favorite -- it's fun for the grownups but simple enough that the kids can get the hang of it as well. Likewise for Parcheesi.

When I was very young, I drove my mother to near-insanity with endless games of Candy Land, and to this day the phrase "Cherry Pitfall" causes her blood to run cold...

Actually, Scrabble is the game around here. My mother and I will have a friendly games with everyone else, but then when it's just her and me, the gloves come off. (You're not going to open that triple, eh? :rage

I love Scrabble! I've inherited my Granny Rae's addiction to it, although I haven't quite achieved her talent for it. The woman is a Scrabble master! I think she has the Scrabble dictionary memorized. I'd go to visit her, and she and I would play for hours. My Grampa was entirely grateful, for unlike Granny, he hated to play. But, if no one was around to play with her, he'd sit for hours indulging her need for the game. He'd say that he'd let her win, but the whole family knew that she could easily kick his butt at the vocab game.
During my senior year as an under-grad my roommates and I became a bit addicted to the game. It got to the point where we were up all night playing, quite a competitive bunch we were! I managed to have a life outside of the game, but my very strange roommates became addicted. I mean, they needed an intervention. They were missing classes, they weren't going out. All seniors in college should be out partying during their last semester, my roommates were failing classes because of scrabble. Neither of them graduated that year, all because of the game. I went out every night of that last semester, and graduated with great grades. Strange

I also really enjoy Trivial Pursuit, and have many happy memories of sitting around with the family and playing until the wee hours of the morning. Monopoly was another family favorite.
It's not a board game, but I have some fond memories of snowed in no school days, sitting at the coffee table in the play room and doing gigantic puzzles with my mom and older sister.

A new game that is fun to play is Scene It DVD addition. I have the first or earlier ediition of the game, which has non-specific, random movie and TV trivia. Now their are a lot of different editions of the game, including the OO7 version. These look like a lot of fun, but once they are played a few times, I think I might get burned out. What's neat about this particular game is, once you buy one game set, you can buy individual DVD's to add to the game you already have. So, it's nearly impossible to run out of questions. You can just keep adding to the library of questions. It's kind of like Trivial Pursuit, but it's all movies and TV questions. I'm not sure if they have done it yet, for I haven't looked at the new editions in a while, but I'd like to get a classic movie/tv edition.

Playing Tripoley is pretty standard for us when more than just the immediate family gets together, though I suspect we will not play this year. Scrabble is also a standard. Last year at Christmas it was charades.

Tiddledy Winks! I played it a lot at my grandparents' house when I was younger. I just recently found a vintage 1937 set and my hubby and I tried our hands at getting the winks in the glass cup tonight. I found out I'm a little rusty since I haven't played it for about 40 years. I used to be the top "winker" against my cousins. It can be a challenge to get the winks to go where you want them to. We found out tonight that we were supposed to be playing it on felt. No wonder we had winks flying all over the kitchen table, but very few landing on points. We did end up with a tie game finally after about an hour of flying winks. I think I've fallen in love with the old game again. Tiddledy Winks--its a great game for all the "young at heart"!

I Love board games! My favorites are probably sequence and baulderdash. No matter who I'm playing with, playing games always brings out some great laughs...and of course, my being competitive, I just love defeating my opponents *evil laugh* bwahahahah!!!!

My wife is always anxious to play a few games of Rack-O. It's simple to play, and doesn't require total concentration. You can also play just a few quick games, or a marathon session. We also love Parcheesi, Taboo, and Catch Phrase.

I have two archaeology games, Wadjet and Tikal, but it seems I am the only one that really likes them! Hmmm. Can't figure that one out!

Wadjet is based on the excavation of King Tut's tomb, and is sort of an archaeological Clue. I think it's great fun, though the instructions do get a bit tedious. Best of all, everyone gets to be a world famous archaeologist for the duration!

Other than Scrabble, Monopoloy, and Parcheesi, though, what are some Golden Era games? I'm not that crazy about card games. Besides listen to the radio, what did Golden Era families do on rainy days at home?

Ah! I've always wanted to learn to play that, but have procrastinated because it looks so complicated. The only version I've ever played is that computer version where you just match the tiles.

I'm there. I'd like to learn but get lazy when I look at the learning curve. Kind of like Bridge (which no one here seems to play either)

We could get a MahJong game going next year aboard ship, but then again, there are plenty of things going on on the QM to keep a gentleman busy.

Carcassonne is one of our favourites, along with Igel Argen, Linie 1, Pit, Lost Cities, History of the World and Britannia. People refuse to play Triv with me these days and I cannot ever find anyone to play Ludo with. [huh]

Lost Cities looks excellent! How is it played?

I wasn't familiar with Ludo, either; that looks like a lot of fun, too. I looked it up on Wikipedia, which led me to Pachisi, the orginal form of Parcheesi. That is also intriguing. How different from Parchessi is Ludo?
