That is the one thing I have never had a problem finding at Salvation Army and other thrift stores. I normally don't have to pay more than a dollar or so.

I have one pair of braces by Albert Thurston, and they are superb. Took a bit of getting used to compared to all my others because the only elasticated bit is at the back (the vertical of the 'Y', if you follow me) - the lengths that pass over my shoulders are nylon. Once on I notice no difference, just took a bit of getting used to putting them on. They are expensive, but if you can get them in a sale, go for it. I also have good braces from Darcy Clothing http://www.darcyclothing.com/shop/braces.html These are in the mid-price range, and really that's where I'd stick. From experience, while you can buy much cheaper, they tend to be noticeably lesser in quality, which isn't worth it in the long run, IMO. I have a couple of pairs of mid-price braces I've bought from various gentlemen's outfitters (here in London, Stanley Ley, Legal Outfitters is good for that sort of thing; also sales on Jermyn Street). If you check eBay you can find often RAF braces (they're a mid-light grey with tan leather ends) very cheaply; I have a pair of those and they are very good. Another pair I have are the "ex-military braces, Used" that Prison Blues sell in the UK - http://www.theamericaground.com/products-page/jeans. Deep green, with green leather ends. A bit unrefined for your best lounge suit, but great for casual, denim or tweeds and country apparel.

The TM Lewin ones are very nice. Very similar to some of the Thurston lines: I have often wondered if they are made for Lewin by Thurston. I know this is common practice among some of the Jermyn Street brands if memory serves, Charles Tyrwitt shoes are manufactured for them by either the Barker or Loake people.

Albert Thurston box-cloth braces are really good and are often on sale in gents clothes shops.

I've also got Albert Thurston ones that are all elastic - the model is called 'country' if I recall correctly.
Also got 'working men's braces' from Darcy that Edward posted a link to (except bought from a shop called The Period House Shop in Shrewsbury- but they look exactly the same)

To be honest, the only really rubbish braces I've ever come across are clip-on ones - button braces seem to attain a certain minimum standard regardless of where you get them.

Thanks all for the help.
I have one more question..... as I am new to this...someone mentioned "Y" back. I thought they were all like that.

I also have found thrift stores to be a good place to fins them. Three pair of Trafalgar's all of which were Calvin Curtis original designs for one dollar a pair. J.D. Hunt
