Nope, but there are other ways to remember the man such as here:
Lt. Col. Gregory Pappy Boyington Memorial Scholarship Fund
A scholarship fund honoring World War II Fighter Pilot Gregory "Pappy" Boyington, a Medal of Honor recipient and UW alumnus. Boyington was a 1934 UW aeronautics & astronautics engineering graduate. This fund provides scholarships to undergraduate students who are either a U.S Marine Corps veteran or are the child of a U.S Marine Corps veteran.

Take a Hit for Me

Its been years (3 decades), but what the hell!! I'm an old China Soldier and it sounds OK to me. I've told some people for years, nothing sets a man up for the night but a pee warm Carlings, and a joint. Compliments of the US Army that is. Have one for me.

I think what happened here is that these kids are upset that they never got the chance to learn to speak Japanese.

By force.

If one follows up on the stories around this, you find what is expected to come out of it is a resolution honoring ALL WWII veterans from Univ. of Washington.

I'm a graduate of their arch-rival school, Washington State, so I have no reason to love UW. However, the discussion does not indicate that there was any particular attempt to be disrespectful to Boyington. Follow-up stories with the students who made the statements indicated that they wanted to make a couple of points and give others a chance to dissent, but that aspect of the discussion really didn't go anywhere.

The result will be a general expression of appreciation for UW's veterans, not confined to one specific person.

It's not all anarchy and disrespect at universities, folks. Most of the attention given to this was due to a hyper-conservative radio commentator (read: a genuine nutball) who decided to use carefully selected comments from this discussion, taken out of context, to generate anti-university and anti-student sentiment in the Seattle area.

In other words, this hoo-hah is attributable primarily to a (right-wing) radio radical, full of sound and fury - and signifying absolutely nothing.

Actually not a darn one I listen to has touched on it other than Neal Boortz, a well educated lawyer and no "nutball" as you call it. The Blogosphere has run with it though. Like the man or not, He was the right man in the right place at the right time.

I want to add that I did not read that everyone on the student senate believed "Pappy" and the Marines should not be honored. There were dissenting viewpoints. I do not believe "evil liberalism" is running rampant among the college youth!
The only thing that bothers me in their democratic process were the unfair observations of Boyington & the Marine Corp. as somehow unfit for specific memorials due to being successful at their jobs. The rational strikes me as rather oxymoronic. Here again, this was done by a minorty of the senate.
It is part of the job of youth to be questioning and liberal in their attitudes. In situations like these the rational adults must teach the younger folks exactly why people like Pappy and every other Marine are heroes and can be treated as such.

...haven't heard of him, but I'll wager that if the name "Bong" came up in a college senate meeting, the resolution would pass. It would be interesting to see what design they would come up with.

There's a Bong Rec Area in Southern Wisconsin named for Richard Bong; the sign is on 94/41 heading towards Milwaukee. It's right over the Illionis border in Wisconsin. Every stoner in every High School within 100 miles has always wanted to steal it. I imagine that sign gets taken at least a 3 or 4 times every year.

Almost every fighter pilot I've ever met was a 2 fisted drinker. That's part of the creed to some extent. The guys in decent health in their early 80s can put you under the table if you're not careful.

I'd met Marge Bong-Drucker on occassion and she had marvelous stories about Dick. She died not too long ago.
