Harp,
It’s a strange and sad existence here in Oklahoma so you have to spice it up anyway you can. Actually I like the plains but there is some room for cultural play.

For example I would love to live in Boston or NY but there it might be too easy. Here you have to work at it a lot to find neat places and neat people and neat things to wear your bowler to/for.

So here I am and here I try to cause sartorial trouble…all in the name of signifying of course.

The Full Circle Bookstore in Oklahoma City has lit fireplaces, oak
panel walls lined with tiers of books with leather chairs. A great place to
spend a few hours.

"Hatless" is now the norm and many people don't know how to react when you show up with a hat - so they say nothing.

Last summer I wore a straw boater on a hot day and braced myself for comments. Sure enough, when I walked into the news stand, the kid behind the counter smiled and said, "going for the State Fair look today, huh?" But the whole rest of the day, which included a business call to a book binding company - not one word.

Reetpleat,

There is a great opportunity for estate sales and resale here. You have to compete against the fraternities et all looking for costumes and I suppose we could call them hipsters looking for jackets and such but the pickings are great. Another great thing is the amount of nice material that comes out of retiring professors homes. There is also an old regional dept. store here that supplies a lot of great older clothes.

Harp,
How do you know Oklahoma so well? Can you recommend anything else of interest?

Orgetorix,

Full Circle is great, local and having burnt down twice and rebuilt they are really committed to keeping it going.
They do have nice chairs and nice wooden shelves and a fire to sit by while you browse, as well as pretty good free coffee, (unlike the Firestone) but no smoking. Oh well. There are plenty of other pipe friendly places here.

Shanghailander,

I think the state fair comment was pretty witty. Though I completely agree with the hatless society comments. Yesterday I wore my bowler again and enjoyed it as always. I have a topper on order but I think my sartorial bravery may not be enough for that.
