Bugsy, that is a classy one, too. I love the suspenders, too. I pursued a pair like these at the 'bay, but didn't bid high enough.

This is the quintessential "Goldilocks" sized bowtie: not to wide, not too narrow, just right. I feel like modern-day butterflies (Brooks Bros. et al) are a bit large for my taste. I wish someone still made them like this.

Absolutely. Modern standard bowties are normally about 2 1/2'', too wide for my liking; which is because I favour vintage ones, usually narrower. More than 2'' wide bowties do not suit me. Also, the diamond or thistle style point bowties are less common today (as are the bat wing, too) and I very much like them. Of course, building up a collection of vintage bowties is cheaper, not a negligible factor...

This said, narrower bowties and those pointed varieties can be found from specialized dealers, although often as special-order (and then more expensive) items. Up to now I have been into vintage bowties only, but I am tempted by some modern patterns.

Yes, thats the size I want! and I cant seem to find them anywhere. I guess I'll have to look for vintage.

Okay, a potentially stupid question:

Are bowties, even vintage ones, supposed to be 'adjustable?' Or are/were they sized for specific-sized necks, the way shirts are?

I don't have any vintage ones but the ones I buy from Bow Tie Club have small fasteners that allow you to adjust the size.

Unless made to measure, they are adjustable. This said, not all are adjustable for every size of neck - some are not adjustable for the thicker necks, and some are not adjustable for the thinner necks. Both of these problems can be fixed.

Well, let me revise and extend: Yes harmony still rules, but because of bow ties having a smaller surface area they tend to be a bit more creative in their patters, so that lens them to be open to more choices for matching compared to the generally more conservative neck tie.

But wouldn't larger patterns that would work with long ties often overwhelm the smaller area of the bow. So many of the long ties from the SUYT thread could never make the transition to bow tie.

I have had these forever and no one interested. I like bow ties personally.

They do look nice. If nobody snatches them up in a couple of days, I may just do so. I'm transferring monies into my paypal for some purchases shortly. I lucked out and got a big refund so I'll be buying an overcoat, some shoes and maybe these ties of they're still here.

I know I've seen knit bowties before, just can't remember where.

I found this quite by accident. I don't know if it's pre-tied or self-tied, though. It looks pre-tied, but since only half is visible and it's head-on, it's hard to say.

I was perusing the 'bay, and found a couple of sellers advertising self-styled bowties that "look great hanging around your neck" and "can be tied too, if you prefer" (not literal, but that was the idea). So, it would seem some guys wear untied bowties because of the look, but are not bothering to, or have any intention of, actually tying them :eusa_doh: ?

Combining patterns... here you have the same plaid jacket, with two different batwing bowties, both having a small sized pattern. First one has a dark maroon ground. The grey of the jacket is pretty neutral, leaning to the warm, so allowing for earth tones too, as seen in the second bowtie, with a brown ground.

I've seen that. Even bought one. It has never hung loosely around my neck.
