How do you get that big giant bow tie knot as opposed to the small knot?
would a big knot for a long neck be most appropriate ? and a small knot for a short neck?
& shapes as well for neck length : butterfly / diamond point / straight edge ???
when would each shape be most appropriate for what neck length & face shape
(wear do I come up with all this crap?)

thanks much! :pizza: :pizza: :pizza:

Its partly in the cut of the bow. You can make it work with a standard butterfly, provided that its not an extreme cut with a very narrow center to the butterfly. A batwing will get you there with its straight cut, but if it is a very narrow bow, like many are, it will not a full bow like you seem to be after.

It really is in how you tie it. You should never pull a knot of a bow extremely tight as it is, because it'll destroy the fabric and interlining (and look funny, like the pic!). Just tie it a bit looser for a fuller knot. Your bow will be smaller, but it'll be a little more sprezzatura.

I giant bow like that comes from a giant bow tie. Bow ties should be about as wide as your face and should not extend passed your collars. The knot, in this case, as compared to a regular four-in-hand neck tie, is the entire bow; the bow itself taking the place of the knot. So, concern yourself more with the shape of the bow rather than the knot in the center.

And with most bows, if you don't tighten it, you will not have those lovely ever so slightly asymmetrical dimples.

As to type, stick to butterflies. Straight bow ties are for only if you're in the deep South and only if you are representing a fried chicken franchise.

The Bat Wing is an excellent, but rare, variation. Ralph Lauren is currently featuring them. More often than not, you see these now in Black tie.

Good luck!
