I tend to give the bow tie tying in the morning my best shot, hope for the best, then check it at coffee break or lunch. I find myself tugging the ends and loops off and on. I want it to be neat, symmetrical, and alert, not sloppy, asymmetrical, and floppy. I try to look professional, but I'm not fussy.

Personally, I like to tie it as best I can and check on it periodically. I find the trick is to not worry about it too much. Then again, I get a little fussy about things anyway.

Neat bow ties can be a hazard!

I prefer to wear my bow ties neat and tidy. I have found out however doing this can be a hazard to ones health! Years ago I was sitting in the back office having lunch with several others. One young lady, wrongly thinking my tie was a clip on, very impishly reached across the table and tried to whisk the tie from my neck. She was very much surprised when she found out that she ended up dragging me along with the tie across the table, leaving my tie half undone. She was wide eyed, and exclamed "You tie your own bow ties!" I dryly replied "True gentlemen do not wear clip on bow ties, they are best reserved for cashiers and busboys." I then retired to revamp my tie.

IMO, the only real sin with a proper bow tie is to keep it in your pocket while wearing a pre-tie confection on a matching pattern, then surreptitiously switch the two later on in the evening. Seems to me more effort than learning how to tie the damn thing to begin with - and if you really do want to make a show of it, I should have thought it far more satisfying to undo the bow in front of people... To anyone who has even the slightest eye for detail, it is also screamingly obvious when someone tries to pull the tie-switch routine, and really worse than just wearing a pre-tied and being honest about it.

Haha. I never thought about that. Do some people really do this? Why?

I've seen it with my own eyes. They believe that it impresses other people because they think others don't notice the blatant pre-tied nature of the one bow, and are fooled into thinking that they have switched them. It causes me to rasie an eyebrow as I leave a function at the end of the night with my real bow still tied...

I have a bit of an obsession with my tie always being neat and correctly dimpled. But with wearing a bow tie I was advised that if it looks a little untidy then people know it's a real one and not a clip-on. But I'm too OCD about everything I wear looking immaculate. I simply can't go out unless my bow tie is symmetrical and dimpled properly on both sides. I really don't want people to think I'm wearing a clip-on but I can't leave it alone if it's not perfect. Does anyone else sympathise or am I being too picky?

A bow tie, like all clothing, should be a reflection of who you are. If you like things "just so" then wear them that way, and more power to you, sir
