Picked up this fleck-y tweed on ebay for pennies. Some stains and mending needed finessing, and it was in dire need of a good press. It looked like someone had balled this suit up and shoved it in a corner of a trunk somewhere. Both the stains and the mends are hidden by the mottled look of the tweed. Seller claims the suit is 1930s, looks early 40's to me. Nary a label to be found, so possibly bespoke or homemade. Construction is VERY simple. Really like the red, yellow, orange, and black flecks.

Tweed Overcoat by John Weitz

The missus got me this coat for Christmas this past year. It is post 1979 (It has some Thinsulate in it, which is how I know) but I'm guessing it is from the mid 80's. It is definitely styled a bit older, though.

Here's a closeup of the fabric -- It looks like it was felted prior to the coat's construction. (This is nice in the wind)


Of course, now that we live in the Torrid Zone, I don't often get a chance to wear it (we did have a few weeks in January and February where I was able to wear it), but when I go back to the Frozen North during the winter, it sure is nice.

Donegal-Style Tweed Sport Coat by Kuppenheimer

This is my "Doctor Who" sportcoat, hence the obligatory bowtie. (Man, I have got to get a slimmer one.)

The sleeve buttons are, unfortunately, starting to deteriorate, so I will probably replace them eventually.

I'm thinking this one is probably either early '60s or (more likely) '80s or '90s does '50s/'60s. I haven't found any guides to Kuppenheimer labels, so I haven't really been able to compare this one with anything other than the few I've found on line for sale. I can safely say it's not pre 1955.

Magee Donegal Blue Herringbone Sportcoat

This is my very favorite jacket. It is a Donegal-woven petrol blue and black herringbone tweed. The black yarns are not entirely black, they have some wine-colored roving spun into them and there are is some very subtle slubbing in yellow and green. The pictures do not do it justice whatsoever.

I recently purchased a Vintage Harry Hall Tweed Hacking Sport Coat with brown guncheck with burnt orange window pane. Here are a picture from the ebay post and from me riding Bella with the jacket on. The ebay seller is named tweedbee and he/she sells a lot of Tweed items.

Love this suit pretty old Donegal pattern IMO. I have a photo of a similar one from the 20s.

I was intrigue with the "Yorkshire Tweed" label as I have a relatively new J.Crew tweed sport coat that has the same label and when I bought it I wondered if it was just a marketing gimmick or if "Yorkshire Tweed" has a long and respected history for quality and workmanship as "Harris Tweed" does?

Does anyone know - is anyone familiar with this label / its history / quality / etc.?

Abraham Moon is a pretty old fabric mill (almost 180 years) in Yorkshire. I see the label quite often.

There are a few different geographic "styles" of tweed. Harris Tweed is the only trademarked and protected name. There's even a law protecting it in Great Britain.

The geographic tweeds that I can think of off the top of my head are:
Harris
Shetland
Yorkshire
Donegal
