Hello Ladies,

There has been a lot of talk about refrence material to the looks of the erea. I thought it might be a good idea to compile them in one thread for us to look through.

Now this is just for listing books, how they rate, and where to buy them, no downloads people.

So share! Lets see those refrences to the looks of the eras we love the most.

All of the books that I mention below I got at Goodwill except one at the bottom. Now, I will give you a run down of what I have for most awsome reference material:

A couple of weeks ago I found one of the greatest books it's title is:
More Fabulous Faces. The Evolution and metamorphosis of Bette Davis, Katherine Hepburn, Delores Del Rio, Carole Lombard and Myrna Loy By Larry Carr. This book is too cool it has tons and schmons of excellent photos of these 5 actresses and their looks through out the years. Of course all photos are black and white, but the clothes, hair and make-up are absolutly to die for! Plus the book gives a little history on each lady.

I have the biography of Edith Head, I am sorry I can not give any more info on this book because it is in storage and I have not read it yet.

Next I have the book: Louise Brooks by Barry Paris which every Loise Brooks fan needs to have a copy of. It also has a lot of most amaizing pictures of the very lovely Louise Brooks and tells of her life story. I found this book several months ago and I have mentioned it in another thread and I actually started reading it about a month ago but I have not gotten very far because I have about 4 books that I am reading currently.

Then I have: Audrey Hepburn A Biography by Warren G. Harris and another book - title: Audrey Style By Pamela Clarke Keogh. These 2 books are also most wonderful, I have not read them yet but I do love looking at all of the beautiful photos of Audrey Hepburn (of course she is also one of my fav's).

Next book is The Rag Street Journal By Elizabeth Mason aka The Paper Bag Princess. This is a different type of reference book for me it does not show examples of old stars and golden era glitter. This book is about how Elizabeth the author has been buying vintage, coture and big name brand clothing items for probably over 30 years. She only exclusivly buys "all" of her clothing from thrift stores, vintage clothing stores, antique stores, garage sales, estate sales, flea markets and swap meets, she never pays full price and absolutly never buys from a "traditional store". This book lists thrift stores to shop at, how to clean and care for your vintage clothing items. It has a list of the most famous and popular designer names (old and new) and the most valuble ones. It also has a list the most sought after and fine costume jewlery names including the most valuble ones. The book also mentions how to go about selling your vintage treasures the ones you do not want to keep that is. This lady now runs a boutique in California that all of the movie stars shop at (every thing in her store she has aquired through all of the different ways and means that are mentioned above!).

Last book is the one that I did not get at Goodwill and that is: Vintage Faces by Angela Bjork and Daniela Turdich. I know a lot of you on this forum do not like this book especially now that it is out of print and is selling on e-bay for about $300.00 but I only paid $12.95 years ago. I enjoy this book because I owned this book before I started buying books about the old time actresses. I find vintage faces most helpful with golden era make-up suggestions and ideas especially because I am a licensed cosmetologist since 1988 and I also have a freelance license to do make-up artisty, I have done make-up for shows,photography, stage and weddings. Not only did y'all get some book reviews you got a little bit O' history about me in the process.

Decades Of Beauty: The Changing Image of Women 1890s 1990s by Mulvey & Richards was an excellent source for me when I first became interested in the vintage look. The book is neatly broken down by decade with sub-breakdowns of things like Makeup, Hair, Celebrities, Underthings, Movies...a lot of fun stuff! It doesn't really have any instructions, but it will get the ball rolling and there's LOTS of great photos.

Kevyn Aucoin's books were very helpful for me in achieving my vintage look, also. I'm sure we all have his books, though.

Vintage Face is great for the vintage recipes in the back! That's the main reason I won't part with mine.

I really NEED Kevyn Aucoin's books, I have never bought them because many of the salon's I have worked at over the years have had these books but now that I am not working in a salon anymore (so I do not have access to his wonderful books any longer).

i looooooove blueprints of fashion as well! i think there was a 50s edition out as well, but i haven't seen it.

Dover puts out a lot of cool books of clip-art from the golden era, some specifically fashipn clip-art, as well as the Sears Fashion series.

the one I am really looking for right now, but that seems completely disapeared, is "1950's hair", the one in the same series as "1940's hairstyles" (which I also want but can't find under 175$, over my budget, but well, I can at least find it!)

that said, I am in desperate need of some very educative books on vintage style, I own a lot of fashion history books, and the book by Aucoin, but I NEED good things on hair, that said, with a lot of illustrations, 'cause I am really bad at hairdo's and as my english is not perfect, i often don't understand written directions :eusa_doh:

does any of you have the perfect solution ?
(and I am more into late 40's and fifties)

I am not sure the 1950s book ever went to print.

You can find hairdressing books and magazines on eBay. I have several from the 1940s, and as they were written for teaching stylists, they have a lot of diagrams and pictures.

amelie, i have a few 1950s women's magazines that give instructions for specific hairdo's. so that's something to keep an eye out for when you're going to shops/flea markets! the 1940s hairstyles book has quite a few late 40s hairdos in it, but it's definitely not worth the $$$!

and i also heard the 1950s book never went to print.

My two newest book purchases to help me get the look are "preview"1955 bought in a charity shop for 1.99 it is a full colour book on the movies of 1955 printed at the time with a special section about fashion at the rear with Joan Collins showing her wardrobe. the other is a social history of the 30's and 40's printed in 1956....excellent source book on life in general at that time.

Barry Paris is my favorite Hollywood biographer and I think his biography of Louise Brooks is his finest effort. This is my favorite biography full stop. I won't ruin it for you but the last chapter and especially the last line is just brilliant--and the photos! Sigh!

I love the Sears catalogue collection books (the ones with photographs, not illustrations). They are incredibly inspirational both with clothes and hair and are a great resource. I currently own three - Mid 40s, Late 40s and Mid 50s. I still need the Early 40s, Mid 50s and Late 50s.
