has anyone noticed that in the article posted, theres no question to put the comments in context?
Did an interviewer ask, "Is Bourne the new Bond?" Or " Is Bourne the American Bond?" or " Do you think you'll do as well as the new Bond movie?"

Hardly an insult to call the Bond movies grounded in the `60s. After all, CasinoRoyale went to a lot of trouble to fit in the retro aesthetics like the old aston martin sportscar to please the old-school fans.

I think this is a very good point. Makes you wonder what questions Damon received. I think that might make all the difference.

Which Goldfinger do you all prefer: the book or the movie?
Just curious.

Sincerely,

Neither. I prefer the song. Gahd, I love that song. Shirley Bassey. Mmmmm.

jp, that's not his finger!
Doran, I agree. "He's such a cold finger."
I noticed the book and movie are quite different (though not as much as later movies vs. Fleming books). I prefer the movie for various reasons. It is one of the few occasions that I prefer the movie to the book.

Sincerely,
The Wolf

sorry , a little late to this party, but I find even the first Connery film anachronistic and revisionist in comparison with Fleming's novels, the first of which were published in the early 1950s. The originally concieved Bond character was a WWII Vet, he was fond of pre-war autos, etc.

Connery (b. 1930) as Bond was wearing a stingy brim in Dr. No and belonged firmly in that cold war era. He ditched the hat and started wearing less tasteful suits with each film. By Goldfinger (1964) he was driving an Aston Martin and ragging on the Beatles - the latter fairly ironic in that his toupees were combed increasingly forward over Connery's forehead in an obvious bow to the peacock revolution.

So Moore, Brosnan et al? They are no more anachronistic than Connery's 60s version was imho.

I'll add that i do enjoy most of the films (possibly excepting Moore's last few, in which he was simpy too old for the role) and - sacrelige, I know, as Connery is tough to beat - my favorite Bond was George Lazenby. Telly Savalas and Diana Rigg didn't hurt my preferrence for OHMSS, not to mention having Louis Armstrong on the soundtrack.

I think it's fairly obvious some of you, especially Twitch, don't recognize that actors are people, like you and me, who play characters and ARE ALLOWED TO HAVE OPINIONS. As much as I enjoy Bond, I do see some of what he's saying.

Anyways, it's not constructive to pass actors off as "meat puppets" just because they say something that you disagree with. If someone you knew said the same thing, you'd just agree to disagree with them.

That is true, but being in the public eye almost anything an actor says is given more weight than it may deserve. Being an actor doesn't make anyone dumber than other people but it doesn't make them smarter either.
