As our Boss (MK) keeps reiterating:

"All it takes for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing."

So...keep wearing those Fedoras because they 'are' making a come-back and the more folk see them being stylishly worn, the more people will start thinking..."maybe I'd look cool too in a Fedora!"

DO NOT UNDERESTIMATE, the power of marketing (let's face it, folk make a living out of it!). YOU wearing a HAT WELL is marketing an image and if it looks good and makes you feel good, then others will pick up on that.

Out here on the left coast, pushing the envelope of casual dress has long been the rule of the day. I don't see many men sporting fedoras, but I do note of late the high end retailers are pushing men's hats. Lots of stingy brims in unusual fabrics mostly. But I actually saw an Armani summer type fedora yesterday. It was a purple-blue color.

Purple Blue fedoras in LA...etc

"It's a start" so personally I wouldn't knock it ;) Might not be 'our' cup-of-Joe' but it's a hat and evolution is just that...slow...but sure.

When I was in Chicago I saw LOADS/HEAPS of fedoras' being worn. GREAT to see and I made sure I mentioned it to the wearers. They 'ARE' making a come back folks (don't kid yourselves), just because they do look GREAT. Fashion runs in cycles as we all know and some cycles are quicker than others (the hat one has taken a while), but the day of the Fedora is imminent, so you folks are the pioneers and trail blazers whether you like it or not.

Some just have GREATNESS thrust upon them, so take hold of the torch and fedora and run Forest...

Yep. With motorcycles, you will hear folks saying this and that about various brands. My comments to some of my buds has always been, "hey, at least they're riding".

Same with lids. I see more "kids" (wow, I am old) at the university my daughter goes to wearing hats (not so many ball caps as much as before). And sure, a lot of "colorful" stingy brims...but they are hats and some nice ones too.

This is indeed a cool thread. The topper in the closet is a bit odd though :) Why the shoes and no slacks?

When Paul Fredrick starts pushing hats they must be on the way back...their newsboys made in Sweden went like hotcakes..

Summer weight felts

It looks like a lot of these hats are thinner felts, which makes sense given that most of the films were shot in Los Angeles and Bogie used his own hats according to sources. So to get the look of many of his hats, I think we have to use lightweight felts.

But his hats were still lined. At least in The Big Sleep his hat appears to have a white lining when it drops off when he is mugged.

This morning, I hopped an elevator in a downtown Nashville office building. The gentlemen in the elevator immediately told me he liked my Fed IV. He said he owns a lot of hats and believes men should start wearing fedoras again. I suggested that he wear his.
I was wondering if you mentioned the lounge to him also?....:D

well there are people who will fill in more on the info but the hat is likely gray in color with a approx 4" creased (maybe 4.25") with a 2 1/8" or 2 1/4" brim with Cavanagh edge. Hatband seems to be equal to or a little less than 1.5" wide. The crown is teardrop or wide center creased (former likely)

Do a search with "bogart" and you will find a lot more info. here are some threads to get started with

My understanding is that Bogart wore his own hats (and clothes) in most of his movies. There are good pictures here of the hats in the Maltese Falcon and Casablanca.

http://www.thegoldenera.net/Hats.html

They look pretty close. Art Fawcett knows something about them since he does replicas for people.

He did my Maltese Falcon hat (in my avatar). It has a 6" crown (deeply creased into a diamond) and a 2 3/8" brim (actually mine is 2 1/2", but Art told me the actual would be 2 3/8"). The crown is bashed so that the front is 4 1/4", 5" on the sides and about 3 3/4" in the back. So you can see how deep the bash is. The Casablanca hat looks similar to me though its probably not the same hat.

My Maltese Falcon hat("The Dingus"), btw, was meant to duplicate its general shape, but not the color, etc.

There is evidence that Bogart wears a Royal Stetson in The Big Sleep as the lining is visible at the point where his hat falls off when he is beaten up and the picture can be frozen to read it. Since the hat looks very similar to the Casablanca hat it might be an idea to look for one on ebay. That failing, contact a reliable custom hatter (Art Fawcett and Optimo come to mind although there are more), show a few good pictures of the hat and let them copy it for you.
