Bogart Hat on E-bay...maybe

Someone is claiming to have one of Bogies lids is selling it. I truly doubt this is really legit.

Bogies or not, it's a nice hat nonetheless. Too bad they only show one picture of it.

They don't claim that is has appeared in a film or even that there's a photo of Bogart wearing it. They claim Bogie paid $6 and there's some sort of documentation backing up Bogart's ownership from an auction in October of 1999. I would think if it were viewable in a movie or photograph, they'd also have a still or said photo posted on the auction.

Decades ago, you could buy "items from Franklin D. Roosevelt's stamp collection." A relative ordered a couple for me when I was a kid and had a stamp collection. All someone on his staff had done was save every envelope addressed to FDR at the White House and rubber-stamped the back with "From the stamp collection of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt." One was an envelope from a drug store in DC (probably a bill) and another was from a high school in the midwest (probably a teacher or students writing a fan letter or school project). An early form of recycling or making treasure out of trash. He probably had instructions for every envelope coming in to be passed through the hands of one of his staff to decide if it might be of interest FDR. All virtually worthless of course, but when you're a kid and can obtain a piece of a FAMOUS stamp collection to show off to all your friends...

It might be legit. I heard a little bit about Anthony Pugliese and this auction on a radio show yesterday. They were talking about the revolver that Jack Ruby shot Oswald with being auctioned. I think they said the hat Ruby was wearing that day is being auctioned too.
The two links to the Today Show on the ebay page are pretty interesting.

I don't have any experience with ebay Live Auctions, but that seller's feedback % would be mighty low for a seller through normal ebay auctions.

Agree. I think that to a die-hard memorabilia collector -- the very fact that this hat (or Jack Ruby's hat, or Oswald's toe tag ) are all emanating from the Pugliese's collection sell-off would prolly be "good enough" provenance for some?!

Now that makes me suspicious. Since when does a murder weapon get auctioned to the public? And at best, it would be held in some museum, or exhibit..not released to a private collector.

Now, the hat, Bogart could have bought it for a friend. Or he could have gotten it as a gift for someone. Buying a hat back then, hats shops were everywhere. It was no more special than buying a neck tie today. And I thought Bogart wore a size 7 hat.

This seller has one of the worst feebacks I have seen on Ebay. Normally I would not comment but the feeback I read, all of them, are just unacceptable. Once got a hat from Gavin Trible out of Iowa, he was a local General Store owner, 23 dollars including shipping no premium, does that count, smile.

If they have provenance, as they claim to have, there is no question that this hat was owned by Humphrey Bogart.

Funnily enough, i suspect Bogart owned an awful lot of things we haven't seen pictures of him wearing. Since probably none of us knew him, it's unlikely any of us know whether he bought an Adam hat or not.

I don't understand the resistance.

fftopic: This probably depends on the state you live in. I went to an auction here about ten years ago and our Sheriff's Dept. auctioned off a few pistols and several long guns that they had taken from criminals. I remember a few before this one, but I didn't go to them.

This doesn't look like a 'Bogie' hat to me either, but I agree with what the Baron said. I'm sure that every fedora wearer on the lounge would wear an Adam and I don't think Bogie would have been any different. Some of these items in this collection might not be legit, but I'm sure that Anthony Pugliese wouldn't have bought them unless he was pretty sure about them.

I'd simply check the auction houses' history; to be found to be dealing with fraudulent material is the death knell for most houses, and to state that all of this "hysterical collection" (did I say that??) is true to the best of their knowledge-all items sold as is, seller not responsible, etc., is putting a lot of money on the line. One fraud case, they lose potential clientele worth millions.

Sotheby's and Christie's can weather storms & scandals without taking too bad of a hit, but these guys could well be selling Sabrett's hot dogs if they get caught with John Wayne's hotpants down.

I've heard of buyers' premiums going for more than the 22.5%- try buying with a credit card at a major auction- min. 25% & 5% for "handling".
