Bob Hope's Porkpie

I was watching an obscure Bob Hope movie, Nothing But the Truth, on AMC a few nights ago. In his opening scene, Bob is wearing a classic '50s stingy snap brim, rough straw, pork pie fedora much like this one:

But wait, this movie was made in 1941. What is Bob doing wearing a '50s hat in a '41 movie?

This made me wonder, how far "back in the day" was this style worn? What do the experts say?

IIRC, Marc Chevalier posted photos of a 20's haberdasher's display window which featured hats that could be described as stingy..but not porkpie.

Pork-Pie

Common hat crown description well back into the 19th century(C.1860) for both felt and straw. More common as a woman's hat early on.
