Hello there chaps,

I was wondering if any of you good Sirs could give me any info on a boater i purchased today. It's made by The York Hat Co. Sadly i can't post a pic as the camera is on the blink. It is actually dark brown and natural woven straw which is interesting, with a navy and cream ribbon. Is two -tone straw common for boaters?

It has no markings on it at all aside from 'The York Hat written on the inside which is in gold with a picture of york cathedral behind the script also in gold. It has a leather sweat band which looks like it has a signature in pencil on a piece of cotton sewn onto the inside of the sweatband. It is in remarkably good condition with only one tiny chip on the brim. I saw a similar one in a vintage store but the logo was in a circle in pale blue and i was told that one was 20's or 30's.

I paid twenty pounds for it, so i hope it was a good buy. Anyhow, Raymond my 30's mannequin head looks rather spiffing in it, so all is not lost!

Any help much appreciated!

Miss Sofia

Picked this up on ebay last week for $25. There was no sweat, the the liner was crumbling and the ribbon was filthy. So, with $12 worth of supplies, I did a little renovation. The sweat is from recently purchased straw hat that I sat on and thus destroyed. (It's kind of my super power.)

I hear that the Super Deluxe with Geiger counters are big sellers in Japan (and parts of Ukraine) these days. Let's hope they don't catch on over here.

I think that's just the hat folks wear when they're trying to get good reception for their radio.... or not?

Anyway, here's my humble submission. I got from the man known only as... Buler! And I have to say it's one of my favorite lids! Unfortunately boater's aren't very practical for everyday wear, so I save it for those extra special occasions.

I attended a sold-out screening of Buster Keaton's SEVEN CHANCES on Monday night. I'd seen the movie more than once, but had never before noticed a quirk about the straw boater he wore throughout the much of the picture. It was a typical boater, except there was a sort of short lip around the edge of the brim. It didn't seem to curl up, but rather to point up at roughly a 90 degree angle. I've searched in vain for a picture of the hat, so instead I've tried depicting a side view of in ASCII art. (Hope it works.)

Anyone ever see a hat like this one?

Must get some photos of my latest Boater - it's a Christies, sold as "vintage" on eBay (no idea of actual age). Mint condition, nice high crown.

Ok, so I misremembered that... it's actually a Dunhill. Here it is in action at the 2011 Chap Olympiad:

Nice shot of the ribbon colour on this one:

Captivating photos! Everyone under an umbrella and you under a boater... guessing there is a good story that goes along with these pictures.

As always Alan, a GORGEOUS lid. I love the weave pattern and the higher crown really compliments the hat. The spiral pattern is a great artistic touch to a boater and it must be very nice to wear on hot days because I can imagine there is great ventilation. :eusa_clap:eusa_clap
