Stetson "The Royal Stetson" boater I picked up yesterday. Minty fresh. Love the liner.

Pedigree hat stand that was in the antique shop where I found the Stetson. I didn't buy the stand.

The Royal Stetson boater

A cousin to Buler's Stetson boater posted above... late 1930s - 1940. Cool ventilated weave.

I'm looking at a boater on Ebay that looks well made. There is a logo inside that is faded so I can't make out who manufactured it. My concern is the size tag says Made in Japan. Is there any way a vintage had would have been made in Japan? How recent a hat does that indicate it is?

I haven't seen one before. They were known for other types of straws. If you send me a PM I will take a look (I am not interested in biding). I could probably give you an idea on the quality / time period. Also someone else might chime in.

Do most of you wear boaters in your regular size or do you go a size smaller to get the higher fit? Felt hats in 7 1/4 fit me perfect. I have a 71/8 that fits but is a little higher on my head. I was thinking that might be the size to get in a boater but I don't know if the felt only fits because it is softer and if the rigid boater would be better in my regular size. Since I can't try on a hat on Ebay until I get it I am nervous about committing the money.

I would go with your normal size. They are stiff hats so you don't want a really tight fit. You can always add some padding. There is always a risk on Ebay. I have won more than I have lost but you do take a chance. Also you can always resell.
