"Golden Age" - you know you might be right. Some might say the 50's were T.V.'s golden age but I disagree. You only had 3 networks, the airwaves was filed with 'me too" Westerns and Sitcoms. Other than the few shining lights much of it was absolutely forgettable AND it was almost completely "white" in content. Cable and pay for play may not be "perfect" but it has certainly broadened the viewing horizon's of the nation AND the world. "The Wire", "Breaking Bad", "The Soprano's", "6 Feet Under" and even the failures like "Enlightenment" are far superior entertainment to the vast majority of drivel given us in the 50's and 60's. Indeed this IS the "Golden Age" of ADULT television.

Btw, why the sudden change in Nucky's attitude of wanting out? I never got the feeling Nucky was anything other than a political animal. Did I miss something to precipitate this change of heart? Surely he cannot be falling for Gator Sally.

He did fall for Sally, and I think he softened after seeing what it's all done to Eli and his family - son specifically.
Might just be a smokescreen. Or temporary sanity.

Gents - discussions on what makes a Golden Age for TV is a strong enough topic to warrent it's own thread, rather than dilute this one like some cheaper Depression Era brew So please avoid mission creep & focus on the great series that 'is' BWE Thankyou Gentlemen.

If any of you drop into your local movie theatres and catch American Hustle, I think you'll be happy to catch a glimpse of Shea Whigman (Eli) in the beginning of the movie as Carl Elway and a much more easily recognized Jack Huston (Richard Harrow) as gangster Peter Musane. Good to see them in the same flick in such different roles.

I agree, but assume there must be an economic reason behind these decisions. Companies aren't known for leaving money on the table (which is why we got Rocky XXXXIIV), so there must be some economic reason behind it; otherwise, why wouldn't they continue making money on these shows? Are these shows still good in quality, but have they lost their audience?

Any Hour long show fights against people having the time to keep watching. Also the longer a show is on especially one with as many stories as Boardwalk it is harder for someone new to start watching. They have to start back at the beginning and 40 hours of shows to watch can take time. So new viewers are not coming on board as much.

Also... all the shows you mentioned having early deaths on HBO, including the excellent "Carnivale" were/are period pieces. Period pieces ALWAYS cost a LOT more money. Costumes, research, props... all of these things cost money... big money. It has to be a runaway hit to justify laying out that kind of cash. Even "Game of Thrones" is cheaper because you can make much of it up as you go along. There's no "rivet head" out there arguing that they got "the Lannister Armour all wrong!"
