At my age by placing an order I am rolling the dice as I might not be here in 9.

In this world, anyone can go at any time. That's just how it works.

But here is some food for thought: statistics show that people tend to go relatively soon after they retire, because, the theory goes, once retired, they tend to have little left to look forward to.

Maybe having a great hat to look forward to might have the opposite the effect, and help to increase one's time in this world. :)

Yes, I agree. Met with my boss last night and I have agreed to continue the contract one more year. I am travelling down to see Bob at BlackSheep next week to place my order.

Well I got a great suprise for Chistmas. My honey has been asking me questions about felt hats. Odd. She usually glazes over when I talk about hats. I shoulda saw this one coming.

Months ago we planned a 9 day family trip to Port Orchard Wa. to spend the holidays with her sister's family. I figured that while there I would see If I could meet up with Bob Jessee at Black Sheep Hat Works to see what he does. So a week before we shipped out, I emailed him to see if he was available. I waited a day and got a response. Sadly Mr Jessee was going to be out of town visiting family so I was out of luck.

On the 27th my wife, sister in law and I decided to go to Oasis Coffee in Bremerton. We ended up in a residential neighborhood in Bremerton. My sister in law stopped and my wife told me we were getting out. I was thinking "This doesn't look like the kind of place you would find a coffee house." My sister in law drove off, leaving us standing in the middle of a residential street.

My wife said "I have a story to tell you." What was going on? Was I in trouble? Had she found a long lost love child? Had she bought us a house in Bremerton? Was this an intervention of some kind? My wife informed me this was the home of Black Sheep Hat Works. She was having a hat made for me. WOW! .......Wait a minute!! Bob was supposed to be in "Texas" visiting his father. Whuuuu?

Unbeknownst to me, my bride had contacted him over a month prior and set this whole thing in motion. When I had told her a week prior that I had emailed Bob and was waiting to hear back, she had to jump into action and commence the conspiracy. Well done Lass! Well done!

I was totally blind sided and caught completely off balance. Bob Jesse introduced himself and we had a great time over the next two hours. Bob was quite informative and taught me a lot about all things felt. It was a great surprise and Bob was and amazing host.

Bob got some basic info to start the process. I'm looking at 100% beaver 7-1/2 LO 6" x 3" in the classic open crown O.R. style in sahara. Can't wait. Pic to come.

Regarding retirement and death. I retired a year ago and I'm still here. My thought is don't consider whether DOING something is worth the effort. Even if the payout isn't great, keep moving forward. You never lose when your not sitting on the couch watching Netflix.

I am as well

I gave him an idea of what I wanted and he sent me some pics of some really nice NOS vintage hat bodies and some gorgeous Tonak heathered felts

after a long discussion I decided on the Arctic Gray heathered Tonak felt with a scorch finish which is where he literally takes a flame to the long haired heather felt and shortens the nap instead of pouncing ... I'm going mid ribbon...6" crown... 2 5/8 brim with Playboy style raw edge with a stitch ... unlined with a vented tip and Bobs signature logo crest around the vented tip ... also his signature vented sweatband

Bob is an amazing dude.... somewhat of a mad scientist

now the wait begins

That sounds fantastic, Anthony.

Any body have example pics of the scorched finish? What effect does it have compared to pouncing?
