I believe Bob at Blacksheeps does custom dye jobs on some of his hats. I couldnt recommend him any more highly.

I’m still trying to find a stand-in for the old black cherry. I was informed that “Rust” is too brown (a nice color but not what I’m after). Oxblood is not available and the felts that might suit my needs are only available through hatters who charge way more than I want to spend (e.g. Optimo).

Has anyone had a hat made in “Cabernet?” It looks like it might work, but it’s hard to tell by looking at such a small piece of felt.

When did these dark cherry hats become a thing? Have they been around forever? That asked, I’ve been keeping my eye out for one for a while. Once saw a guy totally rocking that look and thought, hey, I could do that!

I don't know how common they were as far as vintage hats. I personally haven't seen any examples. My perception of their popularity in the modern day is tied to the Dillinger hat from Public Enemies. That's definitely when it landed on my radar.

I never saw the movie. I became aware later when @Chamuco and others started posting photos of their custom hats. I just don’t understand why Winchester changed to such a dark dye.

Whaddya think? Too wild? Too red? Oddly, although I don't usually wear a fedora with my trench coat, the dark cherry color kinda works... if only because it smashes the Bogey stereotype. That said it was 89 Euros (about 100 dollars) for a wool hat. I gave it a pass. Perhaps the color could be a shade darker. I don't know. I'm normally an easy mark in a hat shop. So I'm proud of myself for not buying it on an impulse. How many fedoras does a man really need? But it could be fun for the right occasion.

Did you really just ask “How many fedoras does a man really need” to this group? ;)

I have been pondering a new hat in this color family. Imho, this one may be a tad too light, and the self ribbon doesn't work for me. I do like the general dimensions.
