... Here are some pics, enjoy and tell me what you think about it (too big, too small, etc...).

Chris QUOTE]

For my taste the sleeves are too short - add another inch and they'll be fine.

The torso is too big (chest and waist) - 1.5 - 2" less and it would be a jacket I'd like to wear. But this is just my personal view...

BTW: B.K. offers customizing, too. They can size down (so the jacket gets smaller in the torso) and make the sleeves and the back length exactly to the length you need (or wish).

I was thinking that maybe the leather quality would explain the price difference between GW and BK jackets.

Yes, this is one big difference - the better the quality the more it costs. And don't forget - Mr. Chapman is not only a perfect tailor, he is an artist ...

! pay attention, measures are in centimeters, you need some calculation to convert to inches ! sorry for the pain...

Kind regards,

Johannes

Remarkable! I have never seen horsehide look so much like goatskin! What on earth do they do to create the pebbly goatskin-like finish?

God knows.
If of interest one day I can post some samples of horsehide so you can see how strange they look.
Why do you think is so hard to find the right looking horsehide?

We have samples of all kinds of horsehide you can imagine, in any color you can imagine, yellow, fluorescent red, gold, electric blue...
And all finishes you can imagine, waxed, polished, cracked, washed, predistressed, crumbled, sandpaper surface, artificially aged...
Also buttery soft, stiff, thick, thin, extra thin etc.
Everything except the right stuff. But the right stuff is coming soon.

Truth be said some of those leathers would make excellent looking jackets. Fashion jackets.
But unfortunately they are not accurate for WWII jackets.

thank you for your opinion, I take them all in account as I am "new in the business". just for the story, it took me about 3-4 months of search, reading, studying before I placed the order... all opinions are worth taking into account.

for me the sleeves are ok, I could agree for the waist for 1 or 2", but I think I got "bad habit" from modern roomy jacket and I feel confortable like this (not baggy for me, unlike my Schott).

in french we say "tous les goûts sont dans la nature" or "il en faut pour tous les goûts" that maybe could be translated by "Different strokes for different folks"

yes, that is true, but also the return policy is different with custom jackets (no return possible, would be difficult to sell a custom made jacket) in case the jacket doesn't fit.

I also like the idea of having a jacket true to real model, based on original pattern like the guys were getting at the time, others may not agree saying that for the price they want something to fit exactly (I may go the custom way if one day I go for a GW)

"One's got to follow his own path. No one can choose it for him."

Yes it looks like goatskin. Not exactly, but close. It's from a sample batch of horsehides that was tested with a few jackets made but it was decided not to order them for this very reason. That it looks like goatskin. It's amazing what tanneries can do with the leathers. They can even make horsehide look like lambskin. They can make almost anything, except maybe to give it the correct look.

What's the deeper meaning making horsehide look like goat?

There's no meaning in that. But at some point Bill Kelso had to rely on middlemen. In their eyes there was nothing wrong if it looked like goatskin. The discussion was something like:

"Hey, you asked for grainy horse, we got you grainy horse, why are you complaining? Now pay us".

That's why we cut the middlemen and went to Italy ourselves to find the right stuff there...

Back to the BK RW 27752! I am remain unconvinced the leather is hh. It looks exactly like goat. Why try to make hh look like goat when goat is available? It does not make sense. I'm wondering if it was mistakenly sold to BK as hh.

Really? and why make hh nappa when lambskin is available?

The texture, feel and weight of this hide is completely different than goatskin. If you handle both you can easily tell the difference. Also, a close examination of the grain convinces that it's different that goat.

I can only tell that the smell and feel of the leather is something I never experienced... but I do not have much elements to compare.
for sure not cowhide :)

it maybe not the best comparison elements, but the goatskin here http://www.lostworldsinc.com/A-2_Flight_Jacket_Goatskin_Leather.htm
looks a bit the same but I can see some difference.
and on this one, http://www.lostworldsinc.com/A-2_Flight_Jacket.htm the 3rd picture looks like mine.

anyway, looking forward to read the thread of Andy showing the horse hides, so I can learn more about it. (some info around the web, but not always with pics that describe thes explanations)

Hi guys, these are the samples I received from BK recently. You can see the Russet HH has a lot more grain than the Seal HH, not as much as the Goat.

PS Andrew, your M442A.... do you have the Brown or the Golden Mouton? Based on my samples, your M442A must be lovely to the touch.
