60, which is called "Kanreki" meaning return to the beginning of the calendar is celebrated by giving the person a red hat and vest in traditional Japanese style.

Some Pagan circles do the same thing - to mark the return of Saturn in their astrological chart to its birth position. :) Fascinating, LaMedicine!

My birthday is next week as well (Dec. 13th) and Ill be the big two-nine. Eh [huh]

I have never really celebrated by b-day because it so close to Christmas. I generally get the lazy "Well your birthday is so close to Christmas, this present/card/greeting/salutation is for both."

Lucky me.

I have a very good friend whose birthday is December 27th. I always make it a point to send him a birthday present apart from a Christmas present. Because of the holidays, it tends to arrive a day or so late, but I figure it much better than lumping the two together. After all, why should he be cheated out of something that everyone else has?

You all who have birthdays close to Christmas, deserve to have your B-days celebrated apart from the holidays, I hate seeing the lumping togther thing.:rage:

So, Happy Birthday to all December Babies!!

My mother in law's birthday is Dec. 26, and she is very adamant that she must get two gifts from everybody, and that they must be wrapped in distinctive paper. She doesn't go in for any neutral wrapping; it's all either xmas trees or balloons. (She's kind of crazy about the wrapping of presents. If you gave her a present without a bow she might smack you.) Since it is her birthday she gets to decide what to do, so we have to wake up at 5am and go get in line at Target and wait for it to open so she can get to the sale. Then we do Wal-Mart, then we do the sporting goods store, *then* we get to stop for breakfast. It's exhausting. I overslept and threw off her plans one year and she still hasn't forgiven me.

Most of my friends celebrate their birthdays by inviting everyone to dinner at a restaurant of their choice, where everyone pools to pay for the birthday person. I don't really do that. I always intend to do something but never get around to it.

BV - no longer acknowledging birthdays.

My mom and family have always been good about not combining my birthday (19th) with Christmas. My new husband the other day made mention of combining my b-day/Christmas gifts. I had to set him straight real quick. ;)

As a Jan. 18th baby, I seem to be just far enough away from Xmas that people don't combine.

I am loathe to have a huge amount of people come to my house and mess it all up, so for my birthday I always go to my favorite bar and invite everyone I know. Every year the pictures are fantastic. It's called the Annual Bukowski's Birthday Beer Bash. I hope I can do it this year, Bukowski's being in Boston and me in Long Island.

Personally I regard birthdays as simple biology and in adult life have never found the desire to celebrate in any demonstrable way. I usually get going for quite a while on my birthday complete oblivious that it is that day until my wife reminds me.

My wife believes they are extrememly important and almost demands the kids acknowledge hers soon as possible on that day. For me, doing nothing on my birthday is exactly what I want a a present!:)
