Those dates you saw are definitely wrong. Tommy very briefly wore a cross-zip (HD Cycle Queen) in 76 when both of these photos would be from. They weren’t doing this stuff in 1970.

Indeed. 74 has always been acknowledged as the start date. Those cross-zips must have been acquired later in 76 too - as memory serves, the first album was released in April that year, and the cover shot came from a shoot they did with Roberta Bayley for Punk magazine in February 76. Famously in that photo (as Aloysius is well aware!) there's only Johnny wearing a cross-zip, so the rest came at some point thereafter. Early days, still refining their image, and working on a very small budget all played a part I would think.

A old friend of mine is a Ramones fanatic/collector and actually owns one of Dee Dee's leather jackets. He was pals with Johnny, and was the source of many of the B-movie horror shirts he could be seen wearing in their later days. My pal still makes a living selling that stuff.

Would love to hear more (and potentially even interview him!)

I wish I'd seen this months ago and thought to post the aution link here...

He actually sold much of his Ramones memorabilia a few months back. It included multiple jackets owned by Joey and Dee Dee, jeans owned by multiple members, shoes, all sorts of stage worn stuff, stage props, and tons of fascinating random ephemera given to him by Johnny who was a close personal friend of his.

Oh no…

I still wouldn’t mind being put in touch with him for an interview though.

As a female rider >600,000 miles (45 yrs old, riding since 13) I think it's cool that non-riders rock biker jackets. I kind of only stick to Espinoza Leathers and Legendary USA for jackets and vests because they will custom fit you. I used to rock some Fox Creek, but heard they mfg overseas and for that reason I'm out. "Prepare for the slide, Not the ride", there are a lot of fake biker apparel companies out there straight out of the middle east (no disrespect) and they might look the part but I'd never trust them if I had to put my bike down. Much Love, Stephy.

Vintage jackets for lady riders can be had for very reasonable prices out there, too. US-made, thick leather. The prices are lower because there are fewer lady riders than guys, and most of these jackets are size S. But they tend to cost 1/2 or less than guys' jackets.

A few of us who are fortunate enough, live right by a manufacturer. We can buy off the rack with alterations. Or have the jacket made to our measurements. I'm spoiled to be able to have several local jacket makers, and spoiled to have correctly fitted jackets. The rumor is that one of my local shops is favored among The Fedora Lounge members. I hear that they will have this shop build custom jackets by phone and e-mail.

In the world of motorcycle riders, it is very difficult to find quality jackets. Plenty of good looking jackets, which may or may not be safe. Imagine the poor people who just don't know better, and they are wearing jackets from Wilson's or Burlington Coat Factory.
