Better than DILLINGER overcoat?

Recently sold on eBay. From the '30s, not the '40s as advertised.

Thank you. I happen to have an example myself, on an early '50s (I think) coat I recently scored.

Any speculations as to why these wonderful old coats tend to sell for so little? I'm guessing it's because the market for them is so much smaller than it is for comparable suits. The coat I alluded to above set me back all of 25 bucks, and it's a very nice garment in very good condition. A year or so ago I bought a very nice dark blue '40s vintage double-breasted coat, also in excellent condition, for 65. And the sellers in both cases seemed pleased to be getting those prices.

Not so much a fan of the wide cut style. Can we call that a polo style? Defnitely gives it a period, 20s early 30s look. I prefer the slim waisted, bigger shoulders style of a 30s belted back style of the period. Not sure what Depps coat looks like for comparison. Nice coat though.

From looking at pics, it is nice, but nothing special. is his vintage? It is trimmer, probably because they felt it would appeal more to audiences to give him a classic big shouldered, trimmed waist appearance. But your post is way cooler as it looks much more period. I was thinking they had him in a belted back like the one I sold last month, which is my favorite. His could easily be modern.

It's a beaut! And what a steal! I would love to know why overcoats on average often don't go for so much money. Speaking as a NY'er, there's a smaller window of opportunity to leave the house in a vintage wool suit without an overcoat. (Although today's weather was a great occasion to do just that!) The window of colder weather that would require an overcoat is significantly larger. So having a couple of overcoats to switch up wouldn't be out of the question at all. I would have to imagine the reason is there are significantly more vintage collectors in much warmer climates...?

But how many women go crazy for a guy in a nice vintage overcoat? Not so much.

Now, a nice belted back, or pleated or whatever, will bring about as much as a good suit of similar size and era.

That would be my guess. Modern costuming is such that they would not try to pass off an off the rack coat, but it doesn't look all that vintage either.

Wow! That's a tough call...

...I REALLY like the double windowpane and herringbone weave on the eBay coat. On the other hand, though, the peak lapels on the coat Depp wears are much more pronounced, which is a plus for me...
