Best Sherpa lined denim / canvas jackets?

Hey all,

I'm looking for a high quality Sherpa lined denim or canvas jacket for cooler temps. I'd prefer a Type 3 style, but I'm open to other ideas. I'm trying to find something with better fit and quality than Levis. Any ideas?

I actually love my Levi’s canvas Sherpa jackets. Nothing fancy, just a solid type III. I have the Bravestar version being delivered tomorrow. Will let you know how that one is. I know some folks weren’t too happy with it.

Can’t remember the name of the company now but they had a shearling lined 21oz trucker. Cost ya about $800. I’ll have to look a little harder to find it.

70's - 80's Levi's and that's without competition.

Sherpa/fleece thickness got cut down by half nowadays so you can't go wrong with anything vintage by Levi's you can get your hands on.

You mean Freenote? Yeah, but it's got actual sheepskin lining, not fleece, so you can't wash it. Otherwise, this one does for a change justify its pricetag.

I actually love my Levi’s canvas Sherpa jackets. Nothing fancy, just a solid type III. I have the Bravestar version being delivered tomorrow. Will let you know how that one is. I know some folks weren’t too happy with it.

Old ones or new ones? I had a Levi's one growing up, but I tried on a new canvas/ sherpa one the other day and was unimpressed with the fit. Maybe it's because Levi's understands that the jacket needs to be cut larger to account for the Sherpa, but a size Large was big on me but too short in the arms.

I looked at the Bravestar - I'm curious what you'll think of that one. The Sherpa looks a little thin in the pictures, but maybe that's just me. They're sold out of size Large, XL might work, but I'd have to check measurements.

Yeah I bought this one at target (it was army greenish) and dyed it dark brown. Size large as well but shrunk a bit in the hot dye bath. Also turned the Sherpa a bit ashy. Sleeves feel OK but they shrunk up a bit too.

I don't believe I would ever again pay a dime over $150 for a denim jacket, no matter how stunning I still find all this top shelf gear to be but... Nah. Take for example Zara truckers, they're really well made, from tough and heavy denim and even the sherpa is of decent weight, yet they cost like $80 tops. I know high-end denim looks better, will fade better, etc. but ultimately, it's not $300+ better and frankly, it's just a denim jacket, not exactly a pinnacle of high-fashion.

But that's just me, I don't at all think you'd do wrong to spend major money on a denim trucker - primarily because my reasons originate from having very little money - just that I personally find vintage Levi's sherpa Type-3 to be as good as anything out there.

I would actually love a blanket lined Storm Rider - been trying to find a vintage one my size for years. I might have to try a new production one to get the sleeves long enough. Lee 101 makes a 13oz selvedge one right now, but I need measurements. I also just discovered the Iron Heart one, but it's pretty expensive - $535

Regardless, I would still like a sherpa lined one for the coldest days.

Agreed. The vintage Levi’s used far better materials that the current stuff, most of which is impregnated with recycled yoga pants. The collars were way better on the old ones too. Much more broad.

Girls bought out a lot of these, too but once they go out of style (by next year), the market will be flooded with cheap vintage ones. Example of a perfect vtg Levi's sherpa type-3. Check out how thicc that collar is. And no, that's not a euphemism.

I love my two reproduction Storm Riders, one is a Lee Japan and the other is a Real McCoys. Both of them are out of production now unfortunately but I have seen them on eBay from time to time. Very warm comfy jackets that stay pretty true to the original in terms of cut and length, although a little bit longer than the originals which were quite short.
I would urge a hard pass on the IH version. When it first came out last year three or four of us here got in on the first round of production. As far as I know every single one of us sent the jacket back the day we received it. It was ridiculously, comically long, even by Iron Heart Standards. If you can imagine a cross between a trucker jacket and a pea coat that is pretty much what you would have.
Ciano Farmer is another maker to consider but I hesitate to recommend him because his production times are so long. I have a couple pairs of jeans from him and a beautiful type three he made for me using 21 oz denim and a Troy mills horse blanket lining. The materials he uses and the quality of construction are top notch but I have waited as long as seven or eight months for an item that was promised to be delivered in 11 to 15 weeks.

My only issue with vintage is fit - if I was born with shorter arms, a lot more things would fit me. I'll admit, I haven't really spent a lot of time looking at vintage - I'll have to dive deeper.

I'm willing to pay more for US manufacturing or really thick denim. Otherwise I agree, you can pay way too much for jackets that aren't really that much better. I've been looking at a custom one from Soso and the only thing holding me back is that it's a gamble on fit and $330 or so is a lot to spend when you can't try it on and there are no returns.
