"Pop, ask'em if they're Russians."

"Nice little boy. We are, course, Norweegans."

I think these two quotes from Confessions of a Dangerous Mind are brilliant. Both delivered by Gong Show creator Chuck Barris.

'When you're young, your potential is infinite. You might do anything, really. You might be great. You might be Einstein. You might be Goethe. Then you get to an age where what you might be gives way to what you have been. You weren't Einstein. You weren't anything. That's a bad moment.'

'Y'know, I came up with a new game show idea recently. It's called The Old Game. You got three old guys with loaded guns on stage They look back at their lives see who they were, what they accomplished, how close they came to realizing their dreams. The winner is the one who doesn't blow his brains out.He gets a refrigerator.'

Speed is a superhero in the guise of Mr. Everyman. His sidekick, Desmond Floyd, is also his ghostwriter. Speed's income is derived from a continuing book series based on his exploits -- Matt Helm, Doc Savage, etc. During a lull in the action, the woman who hired him to find her kidnapped sister asks:

Maggie: Jake, where did you an Des meet?

Speed: (a look of fond remembrance on his face, smiles) Volume One.

"Jake Speed" is underrated because the hero's actions are not what you might expect from a James Bond-ish character. It's more like you or I decided to have fun and become Zorro or the Cisco Kid. And while we're here, let's write paperback novels to make a buck.

I was gracious and waited for someone else. There has been no one else.

This quote must be spoken in dialect and in character -- otherwise like the difference between Guiness Stout and near beer.

"Casting me adrift 3,500 miles from a port of call! You’re sending me to my doom, eh? Well, you’re wrong, Christian. I’ll take this boat, as she floats, to England if I must. I’ll live to see you — all of you — hanging from the highest yardarm in the British fleet."

Here is the most horrifying quote in motion picture history, from (1984).

"All competing pleasures will be destroyed. But always — do not forget this, Winston — always there will be the intoxication of power, constantly increasing and constantly growing subtler. Always, at every moment, there will be the thrill of victory, the sensation of trampling on an enemy who is helpless. If you want a picture of the future, imagine a boot stamping on a human face — forever."
***
Here is the second most horrifying quote: "Is it safe?"
***
And this, perhaps, is the third??

"I, Alexander Manette, physician, innocent prisoner of 105 North Tower in the Bastille, do this day, in my unbearable agony, denounce the brothers Evramonde who brought me here to my grave. I denounce them and their descendants to the last of their race."
***
To finish on a lighter note, from "The Getaway" (1972): He didn't make it. Neither did you."

"The Grapes of Wrath"

Al Joad: That don't sound like you, Ma. You never was like that before.
Ma Joad: I never had my house pushed over before. Never had my family stuck out on the road. Never had to lose everything I had in life.

I find it hard to watch Ma sort through her few possessions, pocket one or two, toss postcards into the fire, and all that.

My favourite film, Withnail & I, takes place in 1969 London, Camden Town, and in Penrith, Cumbria. It's full of memorable lines, oft quoted (invariably drunkenly) by its obsessed fans:

"I've some extremely distressing news. We've just run out of wine, what're we going to do about it?"

"We've gone on holiday by mistake."

"Don't threaten me with a dead fish."

"Right you f*&%$@, I'm going to do the washing up!"

[After drinking lighter fluid] W - "What's in your tool box?" I - "Nothing, I'm telling you!" W - "Liar! You've got anti-freeze!" I - "You bloody fool, you should never mix your drinks!"

"I wouldn't advise a haircut, man. Hair are your aerials, they pick up signals from the cosmos and transmit them directly into the brain. This is the reason bald men are uptight."

"I love the smell of napalm in the morning. You know, one time we had a hill bombed, for 12 hours. When it was all over, I walked up. We didn't find one of 'em, not one stinkin'...body. The smell, you know that gasoline smell, the whole hill. Smelled like...victory.

Someday this war's gonna end..."

If memory serves, the Bond of the books preferred his "stirred, not shaken", the line being changed for the films as they thought it sounded better.
QUOTE]

All the more reason to read rather than view. Thanks for the heads up.

I did wonder about that. The theory is (and the martini experts in FL can clarify) that shaking "bruises" the alcohol making the drink stronger. So Bond would want the drink stirred rather than shaken, so he would have his wits about him by not being too drunk.

Him asking for a shaken drink did not make sense to me. The things one learns on FL :)

Now THAT'S what I call a WOODY!!

Which reminds me of the classic line - "Is that a gun in your pocket or are you just happy to see me?"
