Best hat or hats to take to Disney

Hey all! We are loading up the three kiddos and heading to Disney world in a few weeks. I am curious if any fellow dads have had the problem of what hat to wear? I keep thinking an Akubra would be best for sun protection and in case it gets damaged flying or at the park, but I also worry about what to do with my hat when riding a ride? Any suggestions?

Tilley's really are great travel, hot days , UV blocking kind of hats. You can go swimming with them, stuff them in your back pocket, wring them out and hang them to dry. Not terribly stylish, but extremely practical, light and resilient. I understand the LTM6 model is their best seller in the US of A. I am more of an LTM5 guy myself as I like the narrower brim. Had the same one over a dozen years now. Been to Disney World with it twice. Wore it today while sitting on the back patio with some friends and a couple of cold ones.

I have about 15 Akubras so you know I love their product as well.

The weather down here at this time of year is unbearably hot, so you want something light and with at least a 2 3/4" brim for those long walks and waits between rides. Also, what with the sticky fingers of kids, mustard, ketchup, and cotton candy, I'd wear something washable. As far as rides go, "Hold onto your hat!" I'm speaking from experience.

I went to DW last May, 2014, & took a vented ArtLite without the liner. Worked like a charm...

I have a tablelands without liner and with kangaroo strap that I thought would be perfect, also the 3 inch brim appeals to me with how much I detest the sun

Well, I've done hats at Disneyland, but the heat isn't as much of a factor. As far as on rides, if you have anything crushable, that's the best.

Yes the Tilley esp the TM10 wide brim , vented, washable, pack-able, chin strap, floats, lose insurance

When I hit the parks in Florida I wore an Akubra polystraw hat. It worked very well as it handles sweat, water, general abuse by my children etc... well while also blocking most of the sun and breathing well.

I just got back from DisneyWorld ...I wore my brown fed IV Deluxe and my 3 year old wore his 3 inch Atwoods palm leaf cowboy hat... he got so many compliments on his hat, it was really funny... nobody was wearing hats except us... the rest wore ball caps... last week felt like 106 degrees and my hat stayed put on my head on the lake... I didn't feel like the hat was the wrong choice, I barely noticed I was wearing it.

Wow, interesting. I have felt hats, not the Fed IV, but I have always well, "felt" they were way too hot in the strong heat and sun of the summer. Always grabbed a vented straw, although would second or third the Tilley, though not terribly stylish.

The Fed IV Deluxe is tough, it soaked up the heat but I didn't feel it... maybe it's just my love for that hat... I wore a straw open road the year before and got caught in a rain storm... it ended badly for the brim of that hat..went totally flopsville... so I decided to wear something that could survive the unpredictable weather of Florida.

As an owner of many felts, Panamas, and poly Akubras I concur the the choice of a poly Akubra (Capricorn, Rink, etc) to deal with the random showers and heat and humidity of Florida.

What I fail to grasp is how one would keep their hat on while on the rides: keep one hand on your head at all times, never ride, have a "non-rider" hold your hat?????

In these circumstances I would agree with a Tilley or (preferably) even my go-to kayaking friendly Outdoor Research Sombrero, anything with a chin strap, for the park adventures and a proper hat for the remainder of the time

I concur with the poly Akubra. I have one on order and will consider it as my possible go-to hat for an upcoming cruise. I also think, you have to take a hat you're willing to lose. Meaning, when we do an amusement park, I place the hat in the belongings bin as we board the ride and pray it's there when I get back. Thankfully, a non-baseball hat is probably low on the things-to-steal thieves' list (unless it's one of Moon's Strats and a lounger happens to be next in line). Set it in a bin next to a backpack with bling.
