Best Boot Cut Jean

Wrangler, Cinch, etc.

There once was a long discussion regarding this same subject here at the Lounge, but it's been a great while ago. Wrangler 13MWZ work great, Cinch is good style-wise, but both companies are doing more relaxed and "vintage" styles and fabrics now. Remember that you want a good puddle of material on top of the boot, ie - no high water pants. For slacks, I prefer khakis like Dockers. I just get the next size longer in length. For the less traditional, any jean will do, as long as they're not tight over the top and long enough to not garner a snicker from others who know better.

The only jeans that I wear are Levi's Saddleman jeans, orange tab (20517-0217). They were made in the 1970's and into the early 1980's. They evolved into the Levi's 517 boot cut jeans (which I do have one pair of).

I find mine on ebay and try to pick-up NOS pairs (find a NOS pair in my size about once a year). These are a heavy, raw denim that after a couple of washes are ready to go. They last for years and years. And, they cost less and are of higher quality than new Levi's I would buy at a retail store. Last but not least, these jeans were made in the USA.

Ian: Are you finding the Saddleman's on Ebay? Is there a difference among Saddleman's? meaning they "have to be orange tab"? thanks ------John

Yes, when I get Saddleman's I find them on ebay. In my size, I find them about once a year in NOS condition.

As far as the orange tab goes, I just end up getting them with this colored tab. The Saddleman's that I get always have the 20517-0217 number on the 'leather' Levi's tag on the waist and those always include an orange tab. The Saddleman jeans I own were manufactured from the mid 1970's to around 1980.

I wear boots every day to work. My dress pants are Van Huesen, either in tan or black, and my jeans are ALL Wrangler relaxed fit. I have been wearing boots for years, and the wrangers fit my a$$ and my wallet just fine ,thank you very much!

For jeans, Levis 501 or Wrangler 13mwz. The Levis ride lower than the high-waisted Wranglers. But, those boots are begging to be worn with a brown or blue suit. Maybe even a pair of Khakis.

Well, I took your advice and now have a NOS pair on the way. Took awhile for my size to come up. I think I had some of these back in the day. I am anxious to see how they fit and feel compaired to today's offerings. Thanks for the tip.

Generally I wore Levi's or Wranglers all my life. I never paid attention to the model numbers. Someone gave me a dept store gift certificate and I ended up with two pairs of Luckys. I've had them around 5 years and they're still in good shape. I'd recommend them, but I probably wouldn't buy them on my dime at over $100 per pair retail.

What exactly does Selvedge mean?
