I studied Russian at Defense Language Institute in Monterey, CA, and worked as a Russian analyst in the military for 23 years. Then, I lived in Germany for almost seven of those 23 years, so I know a little German (just enough to be dangerous). I can also order a beer in Spanish, Tagalog, Japanese, Korean, and Strine (Foster's for the house, Mate).

Living in California made the experience of speaking Spanish happen, but I have lost most of that as of now. I have found, however there are in most places a universal language that so far no one has touched upon, the language of "cash"...it always seems to speak real clear!

I'm another one that was fluent in German but haven't used it since college which I graduated from in 1972. If I concentrate, I can still make myself somewhat understood but I've forgotten so much. Through the German, I'm able to speak some Yiddish but I'm definitely not fluent. I also took Latin in high school and was almost fluent in it. Now, my Latin is virtually gone. Years ago, I tried to learn Chinese and Japanese but without success. The only sentence I can say in Japanese is "I don't speak Japanese".

I also speak Polish, French, and Russian. Some holiday Hungarian too.
BTW, this is my first post, so let it be my opportunity to say Hello to all. I have been following this forum for perhaps two years before finally registering. What a great place and what milieu of wonderfully interesting people!

Trying to learn some French for my trip this fall. Difficult language for me to get, but I'm listening to CD's in the car and practice with my wife at night.
Old dog, new tricks and all...
My son (18) speaks fluent Russian now. He had to take the first class 3x before he got it going, and now he can read/write/speak fluently. Talk about difficult!

I know I have maybe said this already, but I found a universal language, spoken any place I have ever been so far in my travels around this world, known as "cash". It seems to be understood no matter where you are, or the language of the locals.....

I think that you've got something there.lol In the Army, though, we used to say that the universal interpreter was the M-16...
