Some remember the Berlin Airlift as the high water mark of U.S./Western prestige and unity. It was a magnificent feat; keeping a starving city alive with nothing but an air bridge. According To the article below, the airlift marked the point where West Germans started to view the West as their protectors and not just occupiers.

My introduction to the Berlin Airlift was Leon Uris’ 1963 novel “Armageddon: a novel of Berlin”, which paints a very vivid and memorable picture of the airlift. Of course, the everlasting image is of American pilots dropping candy to children as they approached Tempelhof Airport.
