Berlin, 1927

Here are some screencaps I took from the film 'Berlin - Symphony Of A Great City', an experimental documentary made by Walter Ruttman in 1927.

It's hard to make out from the images but there were lots of backbows around in 1927 Berlin.

Thanks Mario. Great screen caps. That guy in the third photo has a really high crown in addition to the back bow.

I also love those vertical, centered side dents he put in the crown.

Good observation, I didn't see those the first time I looked. Its one of the more unique hats I've seen in a long while.

The 1920's in Germany and especiallly in Berlin were often dubbed 'the dance on the volcano'. Well, that said volcano eventually went and blew half of the world to smithereens...

Thanks for reminding us of Ruttmann's masterwork, Mario...it is one of the most complete "time trips" into the life or another era and place ever put on film.

Now as for people's clothes - I imagine many were bought before 1923 and just made to do. Few Germans had much money then, and as Ruttmann portrays, there was grinding poverty amid the bustle of Berlin...but what bustle it was! So vibrant and alive.

I was just thinking the same. So much discussion around here on getting a bash just so, but the hats in these old pics look much more utilitarian. And still look great
