After a few days of seeing Cousin Hepcat post his wonderful 78 to MP3 recordings, I have done the same to expose those that were in want or need of Benny. My little present to my Fedora Lounge bretheren. The gift of Benny Goodman's music.. Please note that this web server will be up for the month of August 2006 and then taken down.

1. Benny Goodman Orchestra on August 10th, 1941. A broadcast that they did for NBC. This one is a bit long kids.

2. My all time favorite Benny Goodman song, Roll 'Em. This was recorded off of the original 78 recording from 1937.

10. Chlo*e, recorded January 14th, 1937. Probably the MOST over recorded swing song of the era. A buddy of mine whom is a 78 collector now has at least 20 discs with this very song.

13. My favorite Peggy Lee and Benny Goodman, Where or When recorded December 24th, 1941. Listen to her voice, in my opinion her voice and the music provide the overall tone for the country after Pearl Harbor. There are alot of these folks, but not many make my heart melt like this one does.

Duke Ellington's mysteriously haunting 1941 version (MP3),
but only ended up with about 5.

I saw the Miller Orchestra in the mid 60's at Chautauqua, NY when Ray Anthony was the still the front man. They sounded just like their recordings from the 40's. Talk about consistancy, and most of the original band was still playing with the group at the time.

I like that song!

Has anybody seen the current Glenn Miller Orchestra? Apparently they no longer have Glenn Miller [huh] but I've heard very good things.

I saw them about a month or two ago and they were fantastic. There's just something about a live performance. The band put on a good show, as well. I would encourage anyone who likes the "Big Band" sound and who has the opportunity to hear the Glenn Miller Orchestra live, to do so.

Same recommendation for the Tommy Dorsey orchestra. I saw them a few years back, and they are fantastic in a live concert. Mostly young guys now, but the drive is there to play the tunes like they were new!

That’s about the size of it. Duke Ellington is pretty much known as the greatest American songwriter ever. TD had a better-rounded band than either Glen Miller or Benny Goodman. I’ve often wondered why the people on this board go on and on about Glen Miller. Cheers

They go on and on and on about Miller because he was a Showman. He had good marketing, was an attractive man and his music gave the American public something that they needed during The War. They need a piece of home, and that is something that all of us remember so much because our families, grandparents, friends and neighbors that were alive were given that by Miller.

He gave the boys over there a piece of home, he gave them some music that was happy and peppy with just the right amount of kitch and fluff. He gave them a diversion. He gave them the glamour girls with the great gams and fabulous pipes. He gave them harmonies that allowed them to woo. And that was what they all needed. They wanted something to go ahead and laugh, dance and come together around. What was that? It was swing, it was Miller and it was the brass that carried the sound.

Nostalgia. I guess I’ve never been much for nostalgia. I appreciate things from the past, but only on its own terms I guess. Most of the music that I like is old. But I don’t like the music that I like because its old. I like it because I like it. I might add that I would obviously never presume to tell people what music is good or bad beyond my own tastes and opinions. Cheers

Well, I will have to say Glenn Miller is one I will never tire of. My top Miller “Sentimental” songs are:

1. Moonlight Serenade.
2. Every thing I love.
3. Always in my heart.
4. At Last.
5. Serenade in Blue.
6. Sweet Eloise.
7. High On A Windy Hill.
8. Solitude. (that song haunts me to tears)
9. Indian Summer.

Miller hot tunes:

1. I want to be happy
2. For people like you and me
3. Boom Shot.
4. Kiss Polka.
5. Pagan Love Song.
6. Glenn Island Special
7. The Man Who wasn’t there.
8. Swinging at the Séance.

Now, for Benny Goodman I adore these sentimental tunes.

3. And the Angels Sing.
4. Thanks for the Memories.
5. When the Roses Bloom again.

Now, the numbers that really come on!

Those are songs I really dig of Goodman… there are more but, it’s late and can’t think of them at the moment.

I guess when it boils down to it; I find my self reaching for the band that “Satisfies” which would be that ‘Moonlight Serenader’… Glenn Miller. But, that is when I have to choose for the sake of a pole. I enjoy all the greats and the not so greats! I love all the bands from small to big, Western Swing to early Rock & Roll. I even love Hawaiian music from the 20’s to the 40s… it’s all good!

As a side note, I enjoy my big band from live radio broadcasts… I like to hear the announcer and the commercials… even the way they were poorly recorded most of the time sends me into nostalgia mode! I enjoy my vintage music vintage, not hopped up on digital re-mastered steroids… I do like things cleaned up some but, leave the original integrity to it please.

FYI: For all those who dis like ‘In the Mood’ For the sake of it’s over play but, enjoy ‘Sing, Sing, Sing’ yeah, you might as well enjoy ‘In the Mood’! They are two of the same… Over played and forever branded to the Bing Band era like Levi Strauss is to jeans!
