Awwww shucks. I missed the poll...

I would prefer braces. I do wear both, only because some of my trousers don't have buttons for them, and one of the pairs that does has them placed too low (and the tops roll over, looking really untidy).

IMHO, certain trousers, depending on the cut, don't look right cinched with a belt.

There is a fella here at work who wears the elastic clip-on types. One day in the lift one of the ends snapped off and nearly took out his eye. Not only do the clip on ones look naff, they're dangerous as well! ;)

I find that often me trousers slip if I'm wearing a belt. I hate running down the stairs in the tube and have them slip and end up around my lower waist. Then I have to hike 'em up, my shirt comes out all blousey... whinge whinge whinge... ;)

The regular braces without elastic make the fit even better. They are like a sock garter for your pants. :D

He he, right on. And regarding clips, isnt that for kindergarden kids? :)
I vote for braces (for buttons) with a single strap on the back.

Let alone the routine where his elastic back strip gets caught somewhere (e. g. your hand :D).

I didn't vote as I wear both. It depends on the trousers. Some are designed for braces and some for belts. And yes, some are designed for both, and with those I WEAR BOTH AT THE SAME TIME!!!

This was actually very common back in the day, even when the pants didn't have belt loops. I well remember often seeing the old boys wearing both belts and braces in my younger days, and you see it a lot in old film/photos of workingmen with their jackets off. It makes perfect sense because a belt isn't just to keep your trousers up, it also cinches the waist and allows you to adjust it according to how much you've eaten! Braces of course do a much better job of holding pants up, so the combination of the two is perfect.

Back serious: Personal preferences aside, both braces and a belt do serve a purpose, but still it depends on how well the trousers fit the man. Simple as that.

As a rule, and if you ask politely, a Mister Minit employee will pierce an additional hole in your belt for free.

Suspenders or belt?

I was wondering....
what would be the propper attire for a 1940's outfit? Belt or suspenders?
I have seen some suspenders on ebay but was not sure if this would be accurate for the 40's.

...and never both suspenders and belt at the same time, either.. Nobody needs that kind of insurance policy for their briches lol

I realize that this might have been covered before, but is it best for suspenders outside the waistband, or inside (or does it even matter)?

Never both at the same time for sure. :p
Suspenders can be worn either way and I have seen vintage suits with them both ways. I prefer the inside the waistband buttons myself but I have a few that are outside and I haven't changed them. [huh] :D
I think this takes care of the advice :D :

You will sometimes see pictures of zoot-suiters wearing both suspenders and belts, as if to say "my pants are so high waisted I need both to hold them up!" Of course, this was just a teenage trend.

On the other hand...

On the other hand... if by some wild chance you're a farmer, the braces are to hold the pants up, and the belt is only cinched tight enough to keep chaff/straw/other detritus out of the pants while working.
