I had an old neighbor yers ago, Mr LaFramboise (yes! Mr Strawberry!) who fished all the time. He had a cap similar to that. It was a baseball cap with a long green clear plastic visor. Very 40's. He'd sit in front of his house with the hat, baggy pants, and a sweaty wife beater undershirt.

Bal caps didn't become "dominant" until the 1970s when scads of cheap "once-size-fits-all" caps flooded the market from one of the Chinas. And the main problem was that they were knock-offs= bogus insignia not paid to the teams and sanctioned by them.

Before that guys were wearing, yeah, fishing hats, bucket hats, old military fatigue caps and assorted junk like that.
