The ladies have this really cool thread going over in the Powder Room (keeps popping up in the New Posts) of what they looked like before they got into vintage style, and what they look like now.

I didn't see anything like that for the gentlemen, so I figure we can have one too.

Now to take you on a journey. I would do a simple before and after, but this is more fun

Four or five years ago.

One question is, were you always into a certain vintage era?

I think it's a common misconception when people see X person who has a passion for such eras as the 20s-60s, who's style has changed through out their years. They assume that such people do it for the cool and trends today, and not for the fact that the person has actually been into said eras.

I guess I say this, because I've actually been on numerous message boards specializing in such different aspects of fashion and clothing. From Nike shoes to Japanese Denim and whatever that forum has progressed to, and now settling in a Vintage forum. Each "hobby" I've been into, and transitioned from, has always had a story about when I couldn't buy it on my own, as a kid, and saw all the "cool kids" have it.

My style has changed, not just because it's in, (even though, the style is in...) but because I've finally took the time to sit down and research a certain period of time that I thought was amazing, and have been dying to replicate it since I was 13.

And 10 years later, I finally get my Schott Perfecto.

Now:

Maybe 6(?) months ago, I had dreadlocks. I had already planned that, if I ever cut off my dreadlocks, I'd have a pompadour. But everyone who never knew that plan, thinks differently. I still wear that shirt.

I'm going to stop at here, because I don't even know what's going on...

August 2001, that's me in the background (long story behind that one - but it was staged!)

Then it's on to digital days.... most of my photos until the last couple of years are me in a costume of some sort, but here are a few gems of me as me...

Very unhappy (and a tiny bit tiddly), June 2004:

The Evolution of the English Gentleman...Edward,

Great series of photos. You have attained a classic look sir. You have become one of the best dressed gents on the site as evidenced by the last 4 photos. You sir have STYLE!

I particularly like the ensemble you are sporting on the runway, especially your brolly holder. But in all seriousness you have come a long way. why it seems like just yesterday you were running around in stilletos and stockings:eek: okay not too much seriousness.:p

altq.jpg

then I shaved it off and had a mohwak. only for a short time. no digital pictures. have to find the prints...

Then I let it grow again... oh no. It is not Emo. I am on a Turbo Ac's and Mad Sin concert there.

In between...no vintage clothes but the right haircut:

And I get sad if I don't have the time or money to get my short back and sides lol

Now it is like this:

But I am not full vintage. I wear normal clothes to work and the other stuff to go out or on occassions...or just for fun.

Edit: I gotta remeber the years...tomorrow. I am tired now.

Then... (April 2002, preppy/biker mix crashing the B-52 50th Anniversary party)

Back then, it was all black leather jackets, dark-colored polos, black jeans and work-boots.

A little more recent... (2005)

Tacking more toward "WWII/MacArthur Lite".

Now (well, 2008)...

Sorry, it's the most recent pic I have available--shot on behalf of some characters I work for who didn't know how big a German 88mm Flak 36 was.

No, no, no... Irish. I'm an immigrant here in London, not a native. ;)

Why, thank you!

Yes - alas, only on loan from another gentleman. I should very much like to have one such of my own.

But in all seriousness you have come a long way. why it seems like just yesterday you were running around in stilletos and stockings:eek: okay not too much seriousness.:p

lol The drag still comes out on occasion.... the main thing I have noticed is that while, unlike many, it seems, in the vintage community, I don't frown upon denim, I find myself rarely wearing a pair of jeans anymore - certainly not to work or going out socially (both occasions on which they would be wholly acceptable, more often than not). Typically much more comfortable in a suit than jeans nowadays.

Edward - is there any chance of you posting more shots of your "2004 Halloween party" leather jacket?

I'm not sure what other shots I have of it, but I still have and wear that coat, so I'll have to see if I can sort some out...

Oh and Yeps, I dig your picture by picture commentary. Made me laugh.

I've always worn vintage clothes, starting with childhood hand-me-downs and things like 1960s tab-collared shirts and mod jackets that I was obsessed by in the mid-1980s. Thankfully, as I've got older, almost parallel with my musical tastes, I've realised that I'm much better suited to 1940s and 1950s clothes, and am never really gonna be a short'n'skinny like the bands I worshipped when I was a nipper (Pretty Things, Small Faces, etc)! Here are some funny pics from around 1985 onwards...

The early tab-collar years, about 1985!

Rockin' the Mike Willhelm (The Charlatans, Flamin' Groovies) look, gigging in London, circa 1991 - man, my Vox amp was LOUD!

Rickenbacker 12-string and a striped t-shirt, circa 1993... shortly after this, I noticed my hair was starting to recede and so cut it all off - an appropriate band name, I'm sure you'll agree!

Our stoopid album, circa 1994 - cover (and my haircut!) is a tribute to mighty Boston rock'n'roll band, The Real Kids' first LP...
