Hilltop Farm...

I visited Beatrix Potter's home at Hilltop Farm some years ago. It's like something out of one of her stories! I can still here a little mouse saying, "No more twist! No more twist!"

Go and visit; you'll love it!

If you have the opportunity...

"The Tale of Beatrix Potter," a two-part biography of the author, begins in Victorian England, where Beatrix (Holly Aird) grows up in a rigid family. Beatrix (adult): Penelope Wilton. Rawnsley: John Welsh. Annie: Lois Daine. Mrs. Potter: Rosemary Martin. BBC/PBS 'Masterpiece Theatre'

I've heard of this film and am very excited to see it. Renee Z. is suppose to be portraying Beatrix Potter. Supposedly, Beatrix didn't like children. I've heard of so many famous children's writers not liking children. How crazy, eh?

I think Renee Zellwegger can portray a lot of people of that time. She has a look that can range from the 1800 to the 1980s if she has to. And I think her acting is good if she gets the right role. It's like that with everyone. Definitely a movie to add to the list to see this year. :)

Saw this last night. Absolutely brilliant! Sterling performances from every one of the cast, with no weak characters at all.

Zellweger was perfectly cast, as was Emily Watson (Gosford Park). Lovely to see Ewan McGregor getting back into his acting stride again too! Bill Paterson's (Truly, Madly, Deeply, The Witches) mutton chops were quite the largest I have ever seen and no doubt the real Mr. Potter grew them as a means of blocking out some of his wife's shrill postulating! The latter was superbly played by Barbara Flynn (Cracker, Morse, Inspector Lynley, Poirot...).

The film's visuals were breathtaking during the Lake District scenes - even made me forget that I detest the countryside...for a little while at least!! Fabulous sweeping vistas and landscapes with glorious colours. The London scenes were a little reminiscent of films such as Oliver and Mary Poppins but I liked that. The animation was lovely and elicited more than one "Ooohh" & "Awwww" from both myself and my fellow cinemagoers! I know there have been many films that have combined live action with animation but I don't think I've seen any that make it seem so subtle...and natural.

My only criticism was the costuming. The film opens in 1902 and I can easily accept that most people (other than the very richest and most fashionable) would have still been wearing clothing appropriate to previous decades; however, I don't accept that anyone - much less Helen Potter, who had such a thing for appearances and propriety - would be wearing a low cut gown to a party, that showed off a goodly amount of cleavage! I also do not believe that her staff would have been wearing close fitting uniforms with what seemed to be bullet bras underneath! OK, so they weren't quite as pointy as BBs but the silhouettes were not those of corseted (even for work) women.

As I said, that is my only criticism for an otherwise perfect film. Obviously not being a Potter expert, I cannot vouch for the accuracy of the story but I hope they haven't messed it around too much.

One thing I will advise though - take a large box of tissues! Last night, the entire auditorium had leaky eyes...men too!
