Bay Area loungers: a little help?

I've just been talking a friend of a friend through what he needs to look for in a new suit, and he's going to go for something with a 30s or 40s sort of cut. Since he wants to try things on and see how they work on him, he needs to hit the shops. Any recommendations?

He's a big guy, by the way, and he'll probably need some tailoring to make a suit fit him well off the peg.

I'm posting on behalf of my sweetie Skillbilly, but I would recommend checking out Al's Attire in North Beach. Most of his stuff is not off the rack, but it is beautiful nonetheless and Al is a great character--worth the trip alone.
