Baubles and bling

Hi ladies,
I was searching for a thread about vintage jewellery and I couldn't really find a successful one, so perhaps we could start a new thread where we can talk about our collection of vintage baubles and bling? I'm sure I'm not the only one who is crazy about jewellery

Vintage jewellery really sets off a vintage outfit, so it's one of my favourite things to collect, from elegant Art Deco marcasite pieces to 40s-50s big bright bakelite ones.

To start this thread off, I'll show you my most recent find! A great celluloid chain necklace with cherry bunches (already posted in the *show us your purchases* thread)

However - the real reason I felt the need to chat about vintage jewellery is that I am having a terrible problem with my earrings at the moment - I'm allergic to the metal clips!! I have got an awful rash on my earlobes going on.... anyone else suffering from this problem? Any suggestions? I've even thought of desperate measures such as coating the metal clips with glue, just anything to stop the actual metal touching my skin. :eeek:

Oh that is so sad :-( I wonder if you could replace the clips altogether? On some pieces where the plastics are just mounted on a metal portion, maybe you could purchase sterling silver clips and switch them out? I know that sort of ruins the integrity of the things and could possibly damage them, but it would be a shame to never wear them at all.

A friend told me she covers her earrings with clear nail polish and it works for her. I also read somewhere that coating the metal with castor oil and letting it dry helps, but I haven't heard any reviews on that.
For jewellery, I'm a pearls and cameos person - very old lady-like lol . Just finished recently a pearl choker:



And I adore individual vintage/antique-style pieces - worth every penny!

I'm a pearls and cameo girl too. Goes with everything and looks the business whatever the occasion.

I'm also a clip-on earring fiend. Seeing as my day to day ensemble is mostly jeans or dungarees, i go to town with the earrings.

I'm currently having a bit of a thing for the matching sets of fifties jewellery, i have just bought a couple of sets of Lisner ones from a local antique jewellery store and they will be great for summer.

LinaSofia - i heard that painting them with clear nail varnish worked well too.

I suggest this too. Not from experience, but from grapevine. Also, it may have to be reapplied every now and then.

Juliet, Miss Sofia, LolitaHaze, thank you for that brilliant tip! I will definitely try it out today and fingers crossed it helps! Wonder why I didn't think of that.... when I thought of glue!!!

Nice pearl choker Juliet! Do you make jewellery yourself? At the moment I'm into anything bright and colourful and OTT! More is more, is my current motto! These fruit cocktail 40s clip-ons are a good example of where I'm at they're huge.

An update - the clear nail varnish trick works a treat!! No more itchy rash thanks girls!

Also, I finally managed to get a bakelite bead necklace. I've been watching loads of them on ebay for months. I got this one for £5! Does anyone know why this style isn't as sought after as the graduated beads and the longer necklaces? Those always go for a lot of money (anywhere from £50 to £200). Is it purely an age thing? That the one I got is most likely from the 40s/50s and the longer ones are 20s/30s?
