Battered steerhide or jerky Horsehide

Just ordered the brown battered steerhide. Can change to russet jerky horse hide.
Is this advantageous?

They're both great leathers. I don't think you can go wrong either way.

How is the battered HH aging so far? The brand new jacket's color seems mismatch all the way around . Will aging make the color more constant?

If you wanted a brown colour mid weight which would you go for. I have to let Aero know soon.
I have ordered the brown battered steerhide. Other options are seal battered HH which is a bit more darker.
Or possibly upgrade to seal brown Vicenza.
This is for a Seabiscuit- treating myself for my 50th. Need to get it right. Been to Aero and seen the leathers.
All help much appreciated.

Battered tan HH is different shades- it has the same colour variation as loose tobacco. Aging makes it less consistent as it fades in some areas and darkens in others. Battered seal is similar, but much darker: on balance, I prefer the seal.

I’ve got a seal Jerky HH jacket which was very uniform in colour (but with a pretty interesting grain) when new but it shows now the lighter brown base layer as it wears in. It’s very comfortable and no break in was ever needed.

It is deliberately like that- the only totally consistent hide really is Aero's goat.

The battered seal will stay darker on the front panels and become lighter on the arms, etc., where the colour fades more quickly.

It's a really nice hide, the battered seal. I think that a longer jacket would look great in it, especially one with flapped pockets and other areas that would wear quickly.

If uniformity of colour is your thing, get Aero's seal goat or black goat- it's lighter and seems to show no fade at all over time.

If you've been to Aero and seen the leathers, then why are you asking us? Go with your gut, not opinions of others.

Congratulations on ordering a Seabiscuit! This jacket has my favorite of Aero’s collars. I think it would be fantastic in goat.

Can’t make up my mind. Like the slight redness of the steerhide and have a bias that HH is better quality. Everyone seems to talk of HH but not seen a lot with steerhide. Does any one have both in medium weight.

Don’t have either steerhide or jerky, but recently received one in russet vicenza and it a great colour. Darker than I was expecting and less tan/orange. Really nice colour. Here it is next to blackened-brown vicenza.

None of Aero leathers are better than the others, they are different and have different characteristics.
Each of us knows what we like, and what characteristics we like in different leathers, that might not match what you like and what you look for in leather.
Personally i am convinced most of use would be unable to tell the difference between Horse and Steer in most situations, history has shown it...

Agreed on all points! The different hides and finishes are just that: different. At this high level of leather there isnt a bad one, just different. Also agreed in most situations like 9/10 times we wouldnt really be able to tell. Certain makers or certain tanning methods are a dead give away, but most the differences are so negligible we wouldnt have a clue at all.

As other have said, you can’t go wrong with any of these options. If you like the steerhide then go for it, don’t buy into any hype that horsehide is better.
Also, try not to stress out too much about getting it “right”. There is no such thing as right and this is a process that should be fun not stressful. I know that I did not follow my own advice in the beginning but I wish I had.

I've an Aeromarine in battered steer. My first aero so no experience with any other leather apart from numerous samples aero have sent me. I have no regrets at all about choosing the steer. Easy to wear, nice character. It scratches easily but I haven't noticed any large scratches.
