The Champagne mark is not a quality mark as such. It just states, that the wine is grown and made within a small area - and to some specific standards. In theory, the wine can be quite poor in quality. Garment with one of the wool marks in general use can also be of very bad quality. Quality materials are not a guarantee for quality products [huh]

It's not a quality mark, no, but it tells us something about the product (that it was bottled in a specific region of France) was my point- as distinct from the royal warrant, which merely says that one of the royals or their employees (in the course of employment) bought it. Nothing about the product itself at all.

Quite agree re champagne, though... I'd much rather a good Cava at half the price of a rubbish Champagne!

ManofKent, how do you find the quality of Olney boaters? I purchased one three or four years ago that was beautiful and ended up giving it away as it was a little roomy. I tried to purchase a smaller sized one last summer, but I ended up returning all three of them because of imperfections (holes, strips of braid sticking up, large holes plugged with mismatched braid and glue globs). In the end, I gave it up.

Does the Lounge think then that Bates was being more forthright than Christy's or Lock by clearly saying that the hats were Spanish made? I suspected that Christy's used imported felt, but I like knowing that the blocking and trimming is done in the UK. I try to buy American and British whenever possible. Supporting the homeland and my place of abode.

What makes Lock so pricey if it isn't domestic labour? Brand name cachet?

Joao Encarnado, that's quite a hat you're sporting in your avatar. Are they common in Portugal, or is that your own unique style? I'm a bowler man, myself, which can cause bystanders to stare here in North America.

Roomy is an understatement - I've got a 61 that I must get round to passing on - I ended up sizing down to a 59.

The straw quality of the two I've got are fine. The sweat is synthetic and the mesh liner isn't great, but no problems with the straw body.

The hat on my avatar is a Resistol 20x Black Gold. Cowboy hats like this and the ones I use are not common. There are similar hats that are more common but the crown is different and are only used in musical groups called "Ranchos Folcloricos". I think most are made of wool and rare ones made of wabbit (more expensive). People stare at me too because it's not common someone wear a wide brim hat.
Most hats I see here are fedoras, mostly green or gray.
