Some thoughts on your commendable work as a librarian with a penchant for Italian hat brands
I saw the first Barbisio brand a few years ago on a hat that was in particularly bad shape, then the brand disappeared from the Barbisio hats found on the second-hand market, at least here in Italy.
Some of the brands registered in the 1930s seem intended for limited production and I have honestly never come across them.
I have two or three REXs and saw a DVX a while ago, too small for my head. Next time I will buy it to complement the brands. I also have one or two "Minerva", a more recent brand and little seen so far.

Thank you, Daniele. I enjoyed finding these trademarks and admired the designs on many of them, especially the ones from the twenties and thirties. Comparing the number of trademarks and the years in which they were applied for a picture emerges about these three companies. Borsalino does not apply for a great number of trademarks but shows a steady pace from the late 1900 onwards right into the fifties of the twentieth century. The other Borsalino also shows a limited number of trademarks applied for and mainly in the teens and twenties. By 1926 it was basically already over.
Finally Barbisio has the biggest number of trademarks from the thirties onwards into the fifties, probably because they could rely far less on the Barbisio name alone and seems to have been trying various brands and designs to see what would work.

Not that I know of, Max. In the post war period, Barbisio felt confident enough in their own branding and didn't add any new names.

Caro Stefano, commenting on the Barbisio brands released between the 1930s and 1940s is to take a small journey into how the regime's politics were also present in Italian brands in those years.
There are at least a dozen brands which through lettering or symbolism openly recall the dictates of the regime in national culture.

I'd say it's in their middle period, John. Not very early nor very late, but they did some of their finest work in that period. That elaborate sweatband bow with the five loops is a clue that it is still high quality.

A recent purchase from Brent (who bought it from Stephan) is this Barbisio. This is my first experience with this brand. I simply love the felt!! Awesome hat that will get head time..........

Barbisio Brown Fur Felt Fedora Hat Made in Italy Sz 56 US 7 M I won off eBay early this month. I had to work it as it came very crushed somewhat. The Crown level front and back, so lower the back and reshaped and raised the front. the first set of photos are from the eBay page, very soft rabbit fur felt.

A modern production Barbisio, my guess is made sometime in the last 40 years. Found on the Goodwill site. Only paid $9.99 plus plus.



The open crown is 5 inches, the brim 2 inches.101 grams.
While I'm certain it isn't anywhere near the quality of years past, the felt is still way nicer than I expected. The sweatband is good leather. The liner while glued, is still nicely done, with many evenly spaced glue points. The form is not very inspired, and is the only thing that keeps it from being a fantastic hat.
But still, better than no Barbisio!

Picked up three Barbisio hats this week. None in my size though. Let's see.

Barbisio fedora in grey subbranded Cellini. Size 59 with the bound brim at 5cm and the crown at 11cm at the center dent. Nice malleable felt with a great hand. Nothing really wrong with this hat except for the liner, which needs either a good bath or a replacement. Weighs 99 grams. No labels inside the hat.

Second one and the one in best condition is this one.

Barbisio Supremo stingy brim fedora in what I'd say is olive green. Size 59 with the overwelt brim at 5cm and the crown at 10,5cm at the center dent. In excellent condition this one. Weighs 105 grams. Again no labels inside the hat.
