Before the "Troubles", Baghdad was considered the most sophisticated city in the Middle East, so this should not come as a surprise.

The 2003 troubles, the 1990 troubles, the 1980 troubles, the 1968 troubles, the 1958 troubles, the 1941 troubles, the 1914 troubles, or the 1258 troubles?

For some reason, this makes me think of all the bullion patches my dad brought back from 1950s Japan. There are definitely advantages to occupying a country.

Oddly, my grandfather’s handmade 1950s suits are all from Singapore.

My friends in Tehran (from whence I have recently returned) would certainly dispute that, with good reason, I think.

When people would refer to Beirut as the Paris of the Middle East my mother would say, "No, Paris is the Beirut of Europe."

Paris of the Middle East

I was going to use that phrase, but second guesses myself. Baghdad was definitely the most western oriented Arab capital, even in the days if Saddam.
Actually, I've heard Beirut referred to as the Zurich of the Middle East, because of the banking. Whatever.

So you think the British more western* than the French. ;)

*Following the fall of the Ottoman Empire the League of Nations awarded control of Baghdad to the British and Beirut to the French.
