'Backwards' buttons?

So, today I acquired a houndstooth blazer (camera unavailable at the moment sadly, otherwise there'd be pics). Upon bringing it home I was a bit confused, and surprised I hadn't noticed it. Now, this jacket is definitely a man's jacket in cut, but the buttons are on the opposite, 'woman's' side. Any idea why? Its (former) Yugoslavian, if that has anything to do with it.

Also in former Yugoslavia a men's jacket buttoned the same as in the rest of the world. ;)

I assume it was indeed a woman's jacket. Cuts can often be very similar to men's garments.
I think photos could really help.
