Simply put, I haven't worn a fedora in over a year. Just started again. It's a Dobbs. I put the thin ribbon on it and a TWA Stratoliner pin RBH gave me. I feel more acceptable around here again. In the hat forum, that is. The phone camera doesn't do the hat justice. It's just proof that I've returned to the fold.

Hooray for TALL crowns, WIDE brims, & THIN ribbons!

It's nice to see you back in a fedora. What can you tell us about the Dobbs re: size, crown height, brim width, etc.

Can we look forward to a Campaign Hat next? ;) :)

Hello Dean,

If this is not an indiscreet question, may I ask why did you not wear a fedora for a year? Was it because you wore other kind of hats or caps? Or did you go bareheaded for some reason?

I have to say you have chosen wisely with the "comeback hat"!

Regards!

No problem! I became very self-concious about wearing a fedora. I couldn't take the comments I'd sometimes get. Plus, the felt got warm in the summer and gave no ear protection in the winter, and I just didn't like the straw I own and I like a bunch of military caps I have, so all these factors came together and I just pitched the Dobbs into the closet. This week I got it out. It was like an old friend. I plan on more fedoras, but I'm taking it slow.

I like the way a fedora keeps the top of my head comfortable and warm in cold weather.

I still remember seeing my dad (b. 1909) shoveling snow in a grey fedora with earmuffs. Compared to a pull-down sock cap it seemed complicated at the time, but now I understand. Fedoras rule!

I'm sorry to hear this. I've read about some of the "comments" in the thread where they're all posted and I've been fairly taken aback because I never hear anything like that here in the city. I think things like fedoras and other fringe (so to speak) items are much more casually accepted in heavily populated areas where you can't walk past 10 people without spotting something out of the ordinary.

Nothing wrong with other headgear - I've been wearing a mouton trooper cap on the coldest days here (yes, even in Georgia) but great to see you donning a fedora again.

I haven't gotten the joshing of yesteryear lately, and even the "hey Indiana Jones!" remarks seem to have faded away. Plus I've seen more hats as opposed to caps, all sorts, so maybe folks are getting used to it again. When anyone says anything, it is invariably "nice hat!". Which I follow with a smile and thanks.

Away from Atlanta, in more rural parts, people are more talkative and often more friendly, but headgear there is more common even if just ballcaps, and any hat comments have been positive or politely inquisitive. I hope that proves true where you live.

In any case, life is too short to care what others think, really.
All the best,
- Bill

Your sentiments are much appreciated, friends, and I'm looking forward to expanding my fedora collection, along side the other headgear I like...you should see the D-1A Heavy Crew Cap I scored on ebay. Great cold weather stuff. Can't decide if I should move toward more felt, or build-up warm weather items, that Akubra Capricorn appeals more to me than a panama. No offense to panama lovers, to each their own. A thin ribbon Akubra seems a good bet, but the delays I read about here would be tough to take if i ran into one.
