I haven't contributed to this thread for some time and I am doing so now to express how much I am enjoying this late autumn/early winter: the cooler weather, the shorter days and softer light, the frosty nights and crisp mornings, even the rain and cold winds - and being able to wear thick wool sweaters, etc. Summer was especially roasting and oppressive this year - I have always thought of that season as a rehearsal for Hell and in 2019 it seemed to last beyond what was reasonable. And so I am enjoying every moment of the colder months!

I also prefer a cold gusty autumn, and early winter here in the Midwest has largely stayed predictable,
although warmer. This dawn I donned my Aran and Gloverall-a gusty but moderate temperature-still enjoyable,
imagine a bright full Moon cast over windswept moors; actually concrete and asphalt, add a bit of fog for good measure.
The snow will soon be here and these temperate dawns will recede soon enough.

The conditions you describe sound perfect for me! You have inadvertently answered a question I put to you on the military sweater thread: the Irish fisherman you mention clearly is an Aran!

A Goodwill safari sweater find; extremely cheap and brand new, an inexplicable Celtic cast off.:)
...My dream is to find a WWII Royal Navy submariner (white), thick wool, excellent pristine condition.;)

That is easy to find over here through Outdoor Knitwear or Silverman’s: mine came from Silverman’s and I’ve had it for at least 15 years.

A ten dollar-turtleneck shirt wouldn't do the job? ;)

Definitely not! It doesn’t have the allure or panache of a wool sweater.

There are several threads about military sweaters and sub sweaters, to which I and others have contributed at some length. We’re wandering off topic here, except that sweaters are another big reason for enjoying the autumn.

Autumn has of course given way to winter and I am enjoying the soft light, the short days, the frosty nights and mornings (of which we’ve had a fair number), wearing my favourite sweaters and feeling more relaxed and less stressed than I have for several months. I find that this year I am not looking forward to spring and would happily stay in this relaxed state for as long as possible. Usually I like spring in it’s early stages (mid-late March through April) but last year spring came so early in the year that I felt catapulted into it. Therefore I’m hoping for much more of this quiet, cold weather.
Do other people on this thread feel the same? I find that when I express this view it often seems as if I am going against some sort of ‘meteorological correctness’!

Finally! It started snowing! The yard is already all white. Should continue off and on through tonight and tomorrow morning. Mrs Tiki and I ran our errands this morning before it started. And our daughter flew back to college last Sunday. So we have nothing to do this Saturday afternoon but sit by the window and watch it snow. Lovely.
